We recently connected with Carjie Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Carjie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
The Education Equalizer Foundation is a college preparation organization formed in November of 2021; in the summer of May 2022, we hosted our first HBCU college fair in collaboration with the Common Black College Application at the Cotton Club Museum in Gainesville, FL. The event garnered record attendance and provided over forty students with application fee waivers. The waivers allowed each student to apply to over 60 HBCUs using one application. We recorded this data and followed up with the students. We shared our success with an organization that gave us our first grant. We used that grant to help over one-hundred students get accepted into college with scholarships. Our scholars were accepted to the University of Florida, Princeton University, Edward Waters University, and over 40 other prestigious institutions. Over 60% of our scholars received some form of scholarship, some received a full-ride, and others received partial awards.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am passionate about increasing educational opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. With over a decade and a half of higher education executive leadership experience, I have streamlined processes, automated admissions decisions, and incorporated cutting-edge technology to attract and retain top students. My leadership has consistently exceeded recruitment expectations, resulting in record-breaking enrollments.
My commitment to equalizing educational opportunities led me to publish “You are Accepted: How to Get Accepted into College and Life,” inspiring me to found The Education Equalizer. Through this organization, I empower students to take control of their college journeys. I also provide speaking engagements, higher education workshops, and consulting services. As the founder of The Education Equalizer Foundation, I offer college preparedness assistance to mentees and host virtual workshops for students. Additionally, I serve as an Adjunct Professor in Student Leadership and Development, contributing my expertise to the field of education. These efforts reflect my deep dedication to empowering students and advocating for equal access to education.
I am the wife of Dr. Kerwin O. Scott Sr. DDS, and I am proud to be the mother of our two children. I am a member of Jack and Jill of America, Greater Bethel AME Church, and the NAACP.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I am proud that the middle through high school students we serve at The Education Equalizer Foundation have heard about us through word of mouth and referrals. We do not have a recruiter selling our services to students. This shows a remarkable impact on the community in which we support with college preparedness workshops.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Dr. Kandra Albury is a one-of-a-kind woman who believed in The Education Equalizer brand and foundation before it became a business. I met Dr. Albury when I published my second book, “You are Accepted: How to Get Accepted into College and Life,” After reading my story and helping me to achieve global distribution, Kandra said, “Carjie, you are the education equalizer, you truly care about helping students achieve their dreams of attending college.” And we have been together every since.
