We recently connected with Carissa Beasley and have shared our conversation below.
Carissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
We manage our own Social Media and it has been a huge part of our growth, we started on social media as a page that focused on education within the plant community that was lacking.
We chose to run our own social media so it stayed authentic to our business, we get to have fun and be creative with it. With that we have also been given the chance to handle other companies social media and that has been a really fun aspect of what we do and has gotten us out of our comfort zone.
I think delegating your social media to another team or professional makes sense for a lot of businesses, but with that I say harness what your vision is and let someone else assist with growing that vision. I think a lot of businesses hire out without caring what content is representing their business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are a brick and mortar store dedicated to serving the needs of plant lovers in Las vegas and beyond. With our extensive range of products, we aim to cater to every aspect of your plant care routine, ensuring that you have everything you need to create a thriving and beautiful indoor garden.
Starting our brand in 2019 happened very organically. We moved from Maui to Nevada and brought a handful of our plant babies with us, when we arrived we realized there was a huge lack of houseplant specific shops, so we started traveling to and front california bringing plants for us and even friends which then turned into a business of it’s own. In 2020 we were given the opportunity to open a brick and mortar, we had already established a relationship with a commercial grower in california so it fell into place.
Filling a gap for customers that need a place to come and be guided on all things houseplant care is our goal, as well as a place to purchase all of the necessary items that help those plants thrive. I’m so proud of the environment we created, knowing all of our customers are leaving confident in the knowledge they were given.
We also carry a curated array of items and not just plants, we love to support small makers and brands alike. Wether it’s a cute planter or a cowboy hat incense holder we have it. We believe creating a fun and cozy home environment is so important, and our products and items help support that.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Post covid has been a struggle for many businesses, if not all. We opened our brick and mortar mid covid and although that came with it’s own challenges, we we’re not prepared for the drop in sales that followed such a big boom. We pivoted our business to carry more items like stationary and gifts when sales dipped, allowing us to stay afloat. I truly believe owning a business means constantly pivoting, wether it be new trends or new products we have to adapt to survive.
How did you build your audience on social media?
We built our audience in many different ways, but being authentic rang true for each of those ways. We create content people will relate to, and if they don’t relate then they can ask questions and start a conversation. I believe when targeting an audience, we put out the content we would want to consume ourselves. We don’t have a strategy, or look into analytics which probably has worked against us unknowingly, but we have fun with it which keeps us creating and not feeling stagnant.
Knowing your brand, having fun and paying attention to what people respond positively to will make a difference.
