We were lucky to catch up with Carey Gatto recently and have shared our conversation below.
Carey, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I have had a couple of major defining moments in my career path. The first was because I became a mom and needed to have more autonomy over my schedule, so I pivoted from working in the Hollywood rat race to real estate sales.
The second defining moment came about 12 years later, when I realized that I no longer wanted to work for money. I wanted to work for purpose. That’s when I pivoted to coaching and healing work on a full time basis. I had just completed an advanced level energy healing training, and as happens during these trainings, my vibration and consciousness increased, and I found I could no longer do anything that was out of alignment.
For several years prior, I had felt called to pursue spiritual growth work in my career, but I had been held back primarily by fear around money and secondarily, by fear about how others would react. But after that training, I physically could not make myself focus on the real estate work that had been my bread and butter for over a decade.
I realized it was time to go all in. I had been doing real estate as a means to an end, hustling to achieve my goal of financial and time freedom so I could spend more time with my kids and pursue my passions. But this was simply no longer acceptable to my higher self. As I embodied her more and more, being out of an alignment was no longer an option.
So, I started my coaching practice. I built an online group program for women. And I sublet a space to practice energy healing one day a week. I started really putting myself out there as a spiritual guide and resource. It was one of the scariest things I have done. My family questioned my pivot because they knew how successful I was in real estate. And I had a lot to learn about building a successful coaching practice. But I felt this was my calling, to help women fully own their power and to uncover their sacred gifts, so they can live fuller, more vibrant and abundant lives, aligned with their authentic selves. I know from personal experience this is not easy to do, but I also know it’s the medicine the world needs now. And as each woman rises, she inspires many others to do the same.
I’m grateful to do this work every day, to keep being a resource in women’s lives at this important phase in their lives.
Carey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Coaching is my third career, after filmmaking and real estate sales. I’m a lifelong creative and deep thinker. I majored in Psychology, graduated with honors and did a Master’s in film. But when I had my first baby, motherhood and the competitive rat race of Hollywood didn’t mesh well for me. That’s when I went into real estate. I really enjoyed being my own boss and building a business. However, I always thought of real estate as a means to an end. It wasn’t necessarily my passion, but it was a great vehicle towards building wealth and establishing financial security for my family, and ultimately, the goal was financial freedom.
But I reached a point in my forties when I realized that I didn’t want to work day-in-day-out for a future someday that may or may not ever happen. I’m super dedicated and committed to my work, and I wanted to put my energy and effort into something that was meaningful to me in the present. I wanted to fuel my passion and my purpose. And, so, from my own spiritual growth and healing journey, I created an intuitive framework and path for women to reclaim their power and feminine energy in such a way that they can become the author of their own life, master their emotions, express their authentic self and open up to receive the abundance they desire and deserve. This is how my brand, Goddess Uprising, was born.
I’m proud to share that the clients in my program have experienced huge inner shifts while working with me and many have also launched new businesses, written a book, or achieved other personal goals while taking the course. Others have done so shortly thereafter. This is because most of the time, we are our own worst enemies and only fear holds us back from our dreams. Once we bring awareness to the subconscious beliefs and patterns that cause us to self-sabotage, we can get out of our own way.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Hands down, it’s the belief that you can succeed. This is not just belief in yourself but belief that all possibilities are available to you. Most of the world is immersed in a paradigm of very limited thinking. As adults, we forget that opportunities for miracles and magic are everywhere. And if you operate from that limiting thinking, that is what you will get in your reality. If you want to be successful in a career that is your passion and that can impact a great number of people, you must believe that it’s possible even when it doesn’t seem like it is. This is what I help women do!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the stigma that a modern woman should be fiercely independent, never show vulnerability, and do everything herself. When I was in real estate, I stuffed down a lot of emotions and numbed out with alcohol because I thought I had to be positive all the time and if I wasn’t, it was a sign of weakness. Now, I know that being vulnerable is an act of courage and the only way to release and heal emotions is to feel them. I also now know that we are not meant to be independent. As humans, we are social creatures and we are meant to be inter-dependent. We thrive when we are in a community, a collective and we can collaborate in various ways to get our needs met and to evolve faster.
