We were lucky to catch up with Caren Martinez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caren, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
I am a content creator that creates UGC videos for brands in the lifestyle space. I eventually knew I wanted to work more in the travel space as it’s my primarily the content I post. I saw an opportunity to create video content for Airbnb/boutique hotels that lacked a social media strategy. I had become familiar with travel UGC space on social media and decided to send a cold DM to an Airbnb host, where I was a guest at three years ago. My pitch was short but just enough to get intrigued to hop on a call about how I could help their social strategy. After a few weeks, we had settled on a deal and 5 months later, I was in Mexico shooting photos and videos for this dreamy Airbnb.

Caren, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I had no intention of ever moving into the social media or creator space. Coincidence or fate, I am not sure. I approached a young woman, scribbling some notes in a journal as she brought out plates of sushi. I approached her and asked if she was a food critic. That conversation led me to apply to be a writer at the same online publication she wrote for as a restaurant reviewer too! From then on I found joy in writing and decided to create a blog, and became a contributor at another online publication in the travel space.
Today, I have my own business where I shoot videos and photos for brands Airbnb and hotels for their social media. My creative curiosity to lead me where I am…from passion to purpose. I like to say that I’ve had success in my business due to my ability to understand and execute the needs of the clients with empathy.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Just start! I see a lot of people trying to focus on virality. Social media is always changing. I would recommend that people understand their content pillars i.e. are you trying to educate, sell, inspire or entertain? Nurturing your audience will be important, so you can establish brand identity and then learn how to sell in a way that feels authentic to you.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When people reach out and tell me they resonate with something I’ve posted or it’s made a difference, that is really sweet!
