We recently connected with Captain Dwayne Green and have shared our conversation below.
Captain Dwayne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
What did my parents do right? What a great question. Hopefully, I can give my parents the credit they both deserve. I believe the best thing they ever did for me was teach me that nothing comes before God and your family. Knowing that and living with that in mind will give you the foundation for success. No matter what has been going on in my life, good or bad, my parents and my family have been there to support me 100 percent. I have learned that being successful is great, but being able to fail and get back up, dust yourself off and stay with it is where true character comes from. My dad was a rice farmer and my mom a school teacher and seeing them go from sunrise until sunset everyday taught me a strong work ethic and how to be proud of a job well done. These life lessons built a strong core value for me that carried me from being a hard-headed child to a “pain in the butt teenager” to becoming a successful adult.
My passion for the outdoors was started by my Dad who would take me out to our family farm on dove, quail and duck hunts from as early as I can remember. Hunting was always the best family outing, joining my Dad, Papaw and uncles was just something that we looked forward to every fall. Being on the boat, either in the bay or offshore, was just the way we spent days off from the farm in the summer. Oh, the farm -what life lessons I learned there. As I look back now and see how hard my Dad and Papaw worked everyday is truly something I miss. When I was a teenager, I never really appreciated the time I spent there working. I always thought it was cruel and unjust not to be hanging out with my friends during the summer instead of just working. Now I think, what a blessing it was to spend such quality time with my family and how I learn about a lot of different things : from livestock to growing rice, soybeans, corn and milo. Now as I look back as so much time has passed, I can admire the love and compassion my Dad and Papaw had for us by not just teaching us, but spending quality time with us daily. This is something that has been lost over time, especially in today’s society with technology everywhere.
My parents where always my biggest fan, not just mine but all of my bothers. We all played sports, especially baseball. I still remember the time my mom said, “You know, we have been to over 100 ball games this year and not one has been a professional Astro game.” Funny then, but so amazing to me now to see how their lives revolved around their kids and supporting us and being our biggest fans. Like I said before, family comes first. This is not just something they preached but it was the way they lived then and still do to this day.
I think the biggest lesson I learned from my parents is live out your dreams. Don’t let people tell that you can’t. Be thankful for what you have and be honest and kind to others who may be less fortunate than you. Always give 100 percent and good things will happen.
My parents are amazing people for whom I am so thankful that God gave me. They have stood beside me and never given up on me. They have definitely done more than their share of correcting me when I am wrong but also praising me when I have done the right things too. I hope at the end of the day my parents can look back and no matter my failures, know they did an amazing job with me and my brothers. I hope that I make them as proud to be my parents as I am to be their son. So what did my parents do right? Pretty much everything they could.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Totally Texas Outdoors LLC. is a full – service hunting and fishing outfitting service. We have been in the business since 1999. We are based out of Matagorda Texas but hunt from West and South Texas to Five J’s Hunting owned by my brother Jeff Green in Oneonta, Alabama. We hunt quail, pheasants and trophy whitetail deer. Being from an avid family and hunters and fishermen it was our calling to bring our passion and knowledge of the outdoors to others.
We offer both bay and offshore fishing on the Texas coast from Matagorda, Texas to Rockport, Texas. We have a great partnership with our good friend Captain Chris Pace of Coastal Fly Guide Service based out of Rockport, Texas. Chris brings his love of both wade fishing and fly fishing that we are proud to offer.
Also, Captain Dwayne Green does a Friday morning radio / podcast outdoors show with our good friends at Made in Texas Radio with Keegan Lucas. You can catch the show every Friday morninglive on Made in Texas Radio, Facebook or wherever you get your favorite podcast. Look for “Coffee with Captain Dwayne Green” and enjoy up – to date techniques and just great outdoors conversations to help with your days in the field or on the water.
We are most proud of the work we do with under privileged children, police officers or our military. We do trips to get them involved and to just show that they are appreciated especially in today’s difficult society.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Interesting story for sure. My business partner and I were actually dating right at the beginning of Totally Texas Outdoors. She always wanted to learn how to hunt and fish and was in love with nature. Her skill sets of interior decorating, hosting gatherings, and maintaining above and beyond expectations for clients for all their lodging and meals was just the right fit for us. From the beginning, Denise put everything she had into learning the outfitting side of the business, and in turn, she taught me a lot about making the customers’ comfort outside of the field or on the boat, first class and above. Running the business together has only made our relationship stronger. Being able to totally trust someone and to see them have as much passion for everything like you do is a true God – send. Her outgoing and caring personality has not only helped in the outfitting side of the business but also in the weekly radio programs that we do with Made in Texas as well. She has been able to be on the show and talk about experiences and how a first – time hunter or fisherman actually looks at the experience he/she has this only makes us better all around.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Our best source of new clients used to come by word-of-mouth from existing or new clients; they would tell their friends, family and coworkers about us. Currently, our biggest new client base comes from our weekly radio show and podcast with our good friend Keegan Lucas at Made Texas Radio. Every Friday morning Keegan and I do “Coffee with Captain Dwayne Green,” a Totally Texas Outdoors show and podcast. We cover all types of topics from hunting and fishing techniques to safety for both in the field and on the boat to new products on the market and anything you would need for land management or boat maintenance. There is an array of topics to give out information to help all of our listeners. Keegan does a great job helping promote not just a show but Totally Texas Outdoors . The best part is that he makes a lot of trips with us throughout the year. It is his talking about his experiences and actually getting to see the things we talk about first hand. We can talk about our successes and failures and hopefully help people learn from both. We’ve had a lot of people call wanting to hunt or fish with us. Or even just talk about things we’ve covered. on the show. It has opened doors for us in markets that we could not have done by social media or by print alone.
