Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Canessa Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Canessa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
One of the most rewarding investments I have ever made was in myself and my overall well-being. In past interviews, I have spoken about PhloArt manifesting during a hiatus from my career in healthcare administration. I was struggling with corporate burnout and health issues stemming from an autoimmune disease. A significant life change was necessary, so I made the bold choice to bid farewell to corporate America and embrace my artistic talents as a legitimate business venture.
Through PhloArt, I have dedicated myself to cultivating authentic connections, sharing valuable resources, and supporting fellow creatives in their endeavors. By investing my time and resources into refining my craft and expanding the reach of my business, I have found fulfillment in doing what I love and believe in.
There is a profound sense of peace and wellness that comes from aligning with one’s purpose and operating from a place of love. I am grateful for the journey that has led me to this point, where I am able to pursue my passion wholeheartedly and make a positive impact through my art.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a self-taught artist and storyteller who established PhloArt during a break from my career in healthcare administration. My focus lies in creating digital, mixed media, and collage artwork, drawing inspiration from life, love, music, and my spiritual path. What sets me apart is my refusal to confine myself to a single art style. I embrace versatility and explore wherever my soul leads me.
I firmly believe in the healing and connecting power of art. It is my purpose to facilitate this through my creations, with the hope that viewers and collectors find solace and connection in the narratives I convey. I am dedicated to leveraging my talents and platform to uplift others and cultivate a sense of unity within the creative community and beyond.
One of my most notable achievements is the recent collaboration, Canvas Exchange, with Voyage Group of Magazines. This podcast miniseries delves into conversations with creatives across various fields, offering insights into the establishment of creative businesses, the obstacles faced, victories achieved, and tips and resources for those embarking on their artistic business journey. Through this platform, I aim to provide guidance, resources, and encouragement not only to fellow creatives but also to those who appreciate and support the arts. The wisdom shared is applicable not only to business and art but to life in general.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The decision to transition my artwork into a creative business was not without its challenges. At the time, I was still struggling to achieve remission from the autoimmune disease that has been a part of my life since I was 19 years old. Despite these obstacles, I found inspiration in creating art. In fact, one of my pieces, Bearer, was digitally created during a hospital stay in the cardiac unit. Despite my circumstances, I remained dedicated to my craft, posting the piece on my Instagram account and website from my hospital bed.
During this time, only my immediate family knew the extent of my illness and hospitalization. After a week-long stay, I was released from the hospital and continued to pursue my creative business endeavors. Although I had to move at a slower pace, I never ceased my artistic pursuits. This period of resilience and commitment to my passion for art was a testament to my dedication and love for what I do.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most fulfilling aspects of being an artist is the ability to connect with others through my work. It is truly rewarding when individuals are able to see and resonate with the stories I convey. However, what is even more gratifying is when they can identify traces of their own experiences or aspirations within my art. To evoke emotion, provoke thought, or provide a sanctuary for escape through my artwork is a true blessing and a constant source of inspiration for me.
