We were lucky to catch up with Candy Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Candy, We appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I believe my book was something God always knew I would write, he was just waiting on my obedience. I was told 11 years ago that I would write a book. Not once, but twice, and by two different people. Both people enjoyed my Facebook posts about my daily life as a mom. I would share the good, bad, and ugly but I always had a way of putting a comical spin on it all. I mean, often times a mother laughs to keep from crying. When this book prophecy was given to me, I laughed at the thought because I was a new mom barely surviving. I couldn’t fathom the idea of writing anything! Further more, what would I write about and who would want to read anything I had to say? Fast forward 8 years and three kids later, someone else speaks the same thing over me. It was then that I began to lean into the idea and seek God. I needed to know if this was truly something He had planned for me and if it was, I needed Him to be direct. Direct He was. While standing in the check-out line at Dollar General, God gave me what I would write about and the title of the book. He said, “Write about your motherhood journey, tell the people how you thought you were going to tell me how your life should go but I had different plans and share how I used motherhood to make you seek my face and bring you closer to me. But tell it like only you can. Use the gift I gave you of story telling and humor to bring them in, one-by-one. And call it “Wayment God…Motherhood Ain’t for Me”. Once God gave me the content and the title, the writing and the story came easy. All I had to do was be honest and transparent. And an author was born.
Candy, We love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Candy E. Harris lives in Memphis, TN, with her husband of 14 years. They are the proud parents of Marcus II, Cadence, and Myles. Candy has served in the public school system for 15 years as a history teacher and continues to serve as a professional school counselor. She also writes for her personal blog-Sweeter than Candy, has become a social media presence on Facebook, and is the owner of a small business creating custom gift boxes and baskets. When she’s not writing, recording videos, or making gift boxes and baskets; Candy enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, eating, dancing, and attending her children’s games and events. Over the years, if I had to choose one thing that I am most proud of, it would be the completion of my book. I honestly can not believe that I finished. I have started a lot of things in my life but rarely complete it, especially diets. But this time, I set my mind to writing a book and I finished it. Its the very first time that I sit back and said to myself, “Ok sis, you did that! Finally, I believe that my overall purpose on this earth is to uplift, inspire, and encourage others. So my prayer is that my book, my blog, my small business, my videos, and ultimately my life do just that.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I am told that my transparency is what draws people to me, I also think that my authenticity of living out loud builds my reputation as an influencer, but its probably my amateur skills of humor that keep the people coming back. Whatever it is, I honestly think being ME has helped build my reputation and I love that because its the easiest thing to be.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
My goal of being a best-selling author and influencer is to draw people to Christ. I want the gifts God has blessed me with to be used for His glory. I want my ordinary life as a believer, wife, mom, and educator to encourage someone. I want people to see me and say, “Whatever she’s having or doing, I’ll take an order please.” And then I can respond and say, “It’s just Jesus!”
