We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Candra Spears a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Candra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
One day a friend of mine told me she had signed up for a three hour class introducing life coaching. I had vaguely heard of it and was interested so I signed up to take the class with her. I will never forget that day! The woman giving the class shared her information with us some of that was a list of ‘tools’ she uses to coach: confidentiality, everyone gets to be right, ask for what you want, bottom lining. Then she proceeded to discuss coaching skills: active listening, the big agenda, intuition… Wait, What? Intuition! I asked her, “You mean you get paid to use your intuition? Where did you learn this so I can sign up?”
As I look back on that small but defining moment I realize that class and the Coaches Training Institute programs I took changed my future. I could use my intuition to help clients move forward in their lives, to become who they were meant to be, to change their futures.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Being kinesthetically oriented as a child I was active and showed up physically in different ways – from ballet in grade school, to modern dance in college, to hiking and camping, to gardening and crafting, to massage therapy. I was a massage therapist, hiker, jogger, runner, and walker in my 40’s and 50’s.
As I look back on those times I see that these were tools for dealing with my emotions and were important in the development of my intuitive abilities.
As I shifted into co-active coach training I realized as much as I wanted to fix people’s problems that was not my calling. I studied, trained, and worked to heal myself so that I could hold loving and sacred space for others to heal themselves. There were, of course, important books that were very helpful – Autobiography of a Yogi, The Four Agreements, The Findhorn Garden, etc.
I then began to train in Reiki and Pranic Healing, eventually developing my own form of energy healing – Pleiadian Crystal Healing. I bring all my skills to my coaching, training, reading, and healing practice.
As I sit and write this I recall a quote that has been a foundation of my life and work:
“Try not to change the world. You will fail. Try to Love the world. Lo, the world is changed, changed forever.” Sri Chimnoy
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Healing can take place at different times and using different skill sets. At times a client will come in for a Reiki session and it is obvious that they are struggling with thoughts/feelings. So I might suggest we stop and do some coaching if they are amenable. Then I will proceed with Reiki if there is time. Their healing becomes both physical and mental/emotional. I love that I have been able to integrate many different skills to provide healing as needed.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I have often thought that if I were to do it all over again I might stick out the boring psychology classes and become a psychologist. Also I am very tied to animal communication so veterinarian school would also have been right up my alley.
