We recently connected with Candice Rogers and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Candice , thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I am 43 years old and have been in healthcare for almost 20 years. I was a Family Nurse Practitioner up until April 2023 and I took a leap of faith to pursue art full-time. Still crossing my fingers that I will land on both feet after leaping! The verdict is still out. I don’t regret my decision, experiencing contentment on a daily basis now. I am still treading water and have not “made it big” yet but it’s still early! I hope and pray that as I spend more time in my craft, my pieces will continue to improve and therefore become more valuable.
Candice , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Again, I was in nursing for over 20 years and fell in love with art when I built my first house. The walls were bare and there began my first quest for “real art”. Almost all of the art I had my eye on was expensive, so that’s when I picked up a paint brush for the first time. I began with acrylic paint and this is still my true love. Art for me equals personality. I need to see color and texture and maybe something a little “weird” for it to be interesting and/or appealing to me. For me, the pieces of art in the room are the best parts of the space. It’s how I want my clients to feel as well. Most of the subjects I paint fall within a “coastal cowgirl” spectrum. Think cows, horses, working dog breeds, agricultural landscapes, etc. It’s how my family and I live. My husband is a farmer and there is nothing prettier than a field of freshly baled hay…..therefore I paint them. We have dogs that help us work our cattle, their natural working/herding instincts are incredible to watch….therefore I paint them. I grew up going to field trials with my dad and love to watch a bird dog point a quail….therefore I paint them. I am on horseback alot and the view is just different up there. I paint landscapes that I take while on horseback. We do live near the east coast and it’s breathtaking in it’s own right. There will certainly be a coastal landscape or two every once in a while. In my opinion, I am living the dream and want to take people there with me.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I will be totally honest with you, when I saw the “NFT” question I thought this entire interview may be a hoax. I have no education on NFT’s at all. I have experience only with social media and robots that respond to comments on posts about “selling NFT’s”
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
You can’t be an artist full time. Growing up you hear the term “starving artist” thrown around alot. I had no idea that there are alot of full time successful artists out there. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized how many people did “art” full time.
