Candice, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
Let’s keep it real. There are tons of beauty companies selling cosmetics and beauty products. There are tons of shopping options for beauty lovers. However, there is only one Captivating Candy company. And while we understand why our customers shop with us, we also understand that they can shop with anyone else. Therefore, we really take honor in showing our customers aka “Candy Lovers” appreciation for trusting us with their needs.
One way that we show our appreciation is by adding a complimentary Captivating Candy lip product with their purchase. It could be an exclusive gloss or something similar to their purchase that they would also love.
We also conduct giveaways on our social media platforms. Our most recent giveaway was a $100 gift card to shop at a woman-owned boutique, A Flyy Girls Closet. I’ve always had a passion for all things lip gloss ever since I was a little girl. I desired to produce and own a gloss line. In 2012, I began my journey and due diligence with making a priority to learn everything I needed to know about the beauty cosmetic industry. Several years later, in 2019, I took a leap of faith and launched Captivating Candy!
It’s one thing to have a love for lip products, but if you plan to run a company which serves lip lovers, it’s important to learn more about lip care, ingredients, seasonal shades, shades that compliment different skin tones, undertones, consistency and most of all- what do the people want! I am forever a student and I keep my ear gates open to the beauty lovers.
Our products are referred as “lip candy”. Girls just wanna have fun! Our online based beauty store, Captivating Candy, offers a wide variety of selections on lip gloss and color preferences like soft tints, shiny clears, pigmented sheers, sparkle, glitter, mattes and nudes. We offer duo sets, seasonal and holiday lip products so you can stay “poppin” with the current times.
The problem with alot of beauty lovers is that we may wear the lip products everyday but we aren’t taking care of our lips as we should. Yes, your lips should be included in your skin care routine. I say this to my candy lovers on our social media platforms all the time. As a matter of fact, your lips are the most sensitive part of your body, so we need to be intentional on making sure we are exfoliating and keeping them hydrated. We offer lip care kits that contain all natural juicy sugar lip scrubs, and lip oil to seal in the moisture. Our lip care kits set us apart from other small business beauty lines. We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
There is never a perfect time! Life is all about timing and unfortunately, we don’t control the time. I used to think that everything had to be perfect before welcoming a new season in my life. Starting a business was not exempt. In the beginning stages of developing Captivating Candy, I thought that I needed to know every single piece of knowledge about the beauty industry, as well as all financing, materials, and marketing strategies needed to be in place. Not only was that belief overwhelming but false.
When I first launched Captivating Candy in 2019, I had a limited supply of products, shipping materials with cute aesthetics, using word of mouth and our Instagram platform to market company launch and products. I did not have a website yet which I can now look back and be happy about that. It was best for me to put out the products on hand and see the response from those products, start my order/shipping process and make changes along the way. Your operation will get better and better. You just need to start first.
Have you ever heard that saying “the best teacher is experience”? If I had waited on the perfect time or day to move forward with my business, I would still be here with a dollar and dream. I had to learn that entrepreneurs don’t learn everything about their business before launch. We learn more and more as we continue to show up every day and execute. There are a million reasons not to start but one important reason to go. We may not have all the answers in the beginning but as long as one of the answers is “YES” to the mission, that is the most important.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Would you be surprised if I said that Facebook ads is not the most effective strategy for growing our clientele? Well, at least not for Captivating Candy. It’s showing my face and talking to customers up close and personal. I love pop-up shops because it gives us the opportunity to meet our Candy lovers and gain new Candy lovers.
It’s something about a good ole girl chat, conversation and consultation that forms trust and a bond before the willingness to be captivated. It is the in-person shopping where even the men come to me for advice on which of our products will captivate the special lady in their lives. Of course, you can always email us or send a message on Instagram or Facebook. But it seems to be the face to face pop up shops, conversations in the grocery line and referrals from happy customers that seemingly seals the deal.
