We were lucky to catch up with Candice Martin-Cartwright recently and have shared our conversation below.
Candice, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My journey into the world of waxing was an unexpected and transformative one. At the time, I had just relocated to Florida and was working full time at a beauty salon. My initial exposure to waxing wasn’t as a practitioner, but as a client seeking services for myself. I decided to visit a local establishment in Melbourne called The Wax Chic, unknowingly stepping into a place that would alter the course of my career.
After my appointment, something clicked, and I found myself drawn to the art and science of waxing. The atmosphere at The Wax Chic was vibrant, and the professionalism of the staff left a lasting impression on me. Little did I know that this routine appointment would be the catalyst for a significant change in my life.
Shortly after my visit, I was offered the opportunity to be trained in waxing techniques. Fueled by my passion for learning and personal growth, I eagerly accepted the offer. The initial moments of practicing waxing were admittedly uncomfortable. The fear of causing discomfort to others loomed large, but I quickly realized that clients were seeking my expertise for this very reason—they were paying for a service that involved removing hair from their bodies.
My goals and aspirations evolved as I delved deeper into the world of waxing. I aimed not only to master the technical aspects of the craft but also to become adept at speed waxing, ensuring both efficiency and client comfort. Building a connection with clients became a priority for me, aiming to make them feel not just like customers but like cherished acquaintances.
Over the seven years I spent at The Wax Chic, I honed my skills, built lasting relationships, and absorbed the nuances of running a successful spa. The decision to open my own spa was born out of a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences and knowledge gained during my time at The Wax Chic. Today, as the owner of Beach Bum Beauty LLC DBA The Naked Pineapple, I reflect on the journey that started with a single waxing appointment. I am not just content; I am grateful for the path that unfolded, leading me to where I am today.
Candice, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, I’m Candice, the owner of Beach Bum Beauty LLC DBA The Naked Pineapple. I entered the beauty industry with a background in graphic design and cosmetology, driven by a passion for making people feel confident. At The Naked Pineapple, I specialize in full-body waxing and have expanded my services to include special treatments, featuring Vajacials and Red Light Therapy.
What sets me apart is my authenticity—I stay true to myself and connect with each client on a personal level, often engaging in therapeutic conversations during sessions. I take pride in using non-toxic waxes and pre-waxing products to prioritize the well-being of my clients.
I’m most proud of overcoming obstacles to create a safe and inviting space at The Naked Pineapple. Clients often compliment the spa’s delightful ambiance, describing it as beautiful, calming and inviting.
Outside of work, I enjoy the beach, exploring new eateries, and traveling with my husband. I believe in treating people the way I want to be treated and am excited to connect with those who share my passion for authentic, client-focused beauty experiences.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
In my experience, the most effective way to grow a clientele has been through the timeless method of letting the quality of my work speak for itself. I believe in the power of word-of-mouth marketing, and I’ve seen how it can spread like wildfire. While my business is somewhat private, I’ve been fortunate to have clients who enthusiastically recommend my services to everyone they meet. I’m genuinely grateful for their support. Given the nature of my work, there is a natural turnover, with some clients being regulars and others seasonal. Regardless, I treat each client with the same level of care and respect. The success of my spa, The Naked Pineapple, is attributed to the mission I’ve set for myself – to provide a one-of-a-kind service in a judgment-free atmosphere that promotes confidence and self-worth. My clients are the backbone of my business, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Certainly, owning a spa comes with its unique set of challenges, and I’ve had to pivot to maintain not just the success of my business but also my own mental well-being. In April of 2023, I faced a significant turning point when I experienced a sudden and intense panic attack while leaving to visit family with my husband. Instead of going, I found myself unable to even walk into my own spa in the following months. It was a tough period, leading me to reconsider how I approached my work and personal life balance.
Recognizing the importance of mental health, I made the decision to change my work schedule and how I delegated responsibilities. I had to prioritize self-care and find a new equilibrium that allowed me to continue providing the best experience for my clients. It’s crucial to acknowledge that not every aspect of entrepreneurship is smooth sailing. I’ve learned that resilience is key, and sometimes that means acknowledging when to pivot for the sake of your well-being.
What’s significant about this experience is that, despite my personal struggles, many of my clients were unaware of my challenges. I believe in pushing through and delivering the best service, even during difficult times. However, I share this story to let fellow business owners know that they’re not alone in facing hurdles. Small businesses need to support each other, and I’m always rooting for the underdog because I understand the hunger and determination for success that comes with running a small business.
