We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Candace Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Candace , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I don’t really have a story but I just wanted to talk about how I never knew what I wanted to do as a career because I’ve had so many different interests. The beauty industry has always appealed to me, however I just couldn’t pinpoint what exactly. When I first went to beauty school, I studied cosmetology and I learned quickly that hair just wasn’t for me. So I took a break from school for a while until the day I got my first facial and it was quite life-changing. I had an eye-opening conversation with the esthetician I received the facial from about how she got in the industry and her love for skincare and that day I went home and registered for the next esthetician course. I want to make people feel comfortable in their skin and teach them how to take care of the body’s largest organ, skin. The incredible thing about this industry is there’s so much to learn and the growth is constant. I love what I do and I feel good doing it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m still in the early stages of building my brand. I graduated from Bellus Academy which was a huge accomplishment in itself. I was working full-time and going to school 5 nights a week as well as being a full-time mom.
At school, I was fortunate to meet some really great people who I’m still close to today. After graduation, I was given an opportunity to work with two young ladies in particular, Rita and Natalia. We share two locations where we conduct our businesses, we have workshops for continued education and testing new products and procedures. I’ve also taken the first steps in career by learning from a franchise well known across the nation.
The beautiful thing about my career is the growth and possibilities are endless. There are always new services and skills to learn and I’m excited for more opportunities in the future.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a child of a small business owner, I think I’ve always had it in me to become an entrepreneur, but I never understood the hardship and discipline that goes into it until I tried some other small businesses ventures first. During the pandemic, I got into creating resin art and started an Etsy shop. I tried working from home, but you need a lot of ventilation for that kind of art and I wasn’t financially prepared finding space to complete orders so I had to put that on pause for now. I plan on getting back into that when I get more time and space because it was fun!
I guess the point that I’m trying to make is building your own business doesn’t always work the first time so don’t quit. Learning from past errors has helped me grow through this process.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Like I said earlier, I share two locations with a couple of extremely talented individuals. We’re able to work together and pitch in to keep products and supplies in stock. Currently, I’m working two other part time jobs to help financially as I continue to grow my own business.
