We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Candace Tell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Candace, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with inspirations and heroes. Are there any historical figures you look up to?
One historical figure I’ve always looked up to was Madam C.J. Walker. She was the first black woman millionaire. One of the lesson I learned from hearing her story was to never give up even with all odds stacked against you. I was in a black history play in 4th grade and I had to portray Madam C.J. Walker and that’s when I learned about her and I was forever intrigued. I told myself I would be a millionaire just like her. So she is one of the reasons I wanted to be a business owner.

Candace, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am what you would call a serial entrepreneur (better word for Jill of many trades).I currently own an event planning company called Untouched Details Event Planning (we leave no detail untouched). We specialize in wedding coordinating, balloon design, and special event planning.ie(birthdays, baby showers). At our company the main goal is to work with our customers and bring them a detailed stress free event. I got into event planning because I always loved a good themed party and how you can turn nothing into something. Two things I enjoy in life are transformation and celebration so creating events bring me so much joy. We are still growing as a company and we are always ready to create memories with new customers. I also co own a personal styling business with a friend of mine(Tiffany Roper) called Thrift Theory and Style. We give women the personal styling experience on a thrifted budget. We offer monthly subscription, private styling, closet audits, and style parties. Our mission is to build confidence in women to love themselves and look good while doing it. This business also plays into my love for transformation, we love nothing more than seeing women smile when the put on something they love and can afford. These are my main ventures at this time but being the creative spirit that I am I always have something brewing so be on the lookout for what’s next.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth. I pride myself on being honest and reliable in everything that I do. I believe this has helped me with my previous customers being able to refer me to new customers.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I would say a time when I had to be resilient is choosing to start the business. I had be decorating events for family and friends for years but always wanted to do it professionally. I would watch David Tutera show growing up and I would say I will do this one day. I believe sometimes we overlook how much it really takes to just START. So finally taking the leap to start my business and keep going no matter what it looks like has be one of my most resilient moments.
