Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Candace Green. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Candace , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my most meaningful projects to date is the “Food Club”, which aims to address educational barriers related to children being able to eat nutritious foods, who may live in food insecure areas. The class is only twice per month for about 5 months, but seeing each class be able to retain information from pervious years means that this program is making an impact. It’s truly inspiring, and gives me the motivation to continue each year. Eventually I would like to see this program in multiple schools across the Birmingham area.
Candace , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have truly seemed to live multiple lives in my 30 years. I grew up in Washington, D.C. and moved to Birmingham, Al to pursue my aspiration of becoming a doctor. Simultaneously I began writing a book that combined pieces of my upbringing with the lessons I learned during those unfortunate hard times. During that process I discovered I had been blessed with the gift of words, and I started an inspirational and witty blog. Currently I work as a Clinical Research Coordinator at one of the top research universities in the South, and Director of Health and Wellness at The Regenerate Society Inc.; a non-profit that aims to tackle social issues through community service initiatives. I have also started a podcast dedicated to food, a topic I am also truly passionate about. At the end of this year I will graduate with my Masters Degree in Public Health, and I plan to continue my work in making healthy food accessible for those who may live in food insecure areas.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For me it’s all about vulnerability. I feel that we live in a time where a certain hardness and disconnect from feelings. I hope that everything I do inspires someone else to live their most vulnerable and honest life. I like to say that writing is my super power, and I’m glad I’m able to touch other lives with it. In my career, I hope that I am able to continue to advocate and provide resources for those who may not be able to do that for themselves.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Sometimes as a creative it can seem like you are just putting your work into the void, and it’s not being consumed by anyone. It’s usually at those moments when I’m reminded that my work does indeed resonate with people other than myself. Hearing a “Oh that post was just for me” or “I can definitely relate” is a little reminder that the things I do aren’t in vain. As I’ve gotten older I have realized however that even if my work is just for me, that’s also enough as well.
