Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Candace Davenport. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Candace thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
This journey has had its ups and downs. I started my club during Covid and that was for sure a game changer. Having to stop our season during the middle of our club season was hard but it taught me to fight for what I believe in and that the kids I coach matter above all.
This last season was incredibly tough due to growing pains and trying out new systems but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I own one of the 3 black-owned clubs in Memphis. I started my club because I saw a need for there to be more affordable options in our region. We are a competitive program whose mission is to provide an opportunity for success on and off the court regardless of financial or socioeconomic standing. We specialize in creating a mentally and physically healthy environment for young athletes to test themselves through challenging training and competition.
We are most known for the athletes who are encouraged every day by a supportive staff of coaches who will seek to actively improve the overall lives of these athletes by being positive mentors who both know the game and seek to create a balance between sport and life. I am most proud brand-wise of winning our bracket division for AAU Nationals in 2022.
This was a group of ladies who came together during the postseason who didn’t play together during the regular season but had so much love and support for one another during the 2 months that they trained and competed together.
I want the readers to know that my brand offers private and group lessons, motivational speaking opportunities, and an environment where we not only compete to win but an environment that teaches life lessons as well as on-the-court lessons. I am proud of every single athlete that I have had the privilege of coaching.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
The most important advice that I have learned and can share in my journey of being a club director for the past 5 years is to never give up, keep competing, be loyal to yourself, and keep a tight circle around you that wants to see you succeed. Take breaks as well and focus on something for yourself so you don’t experience burnout.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I hosted a tournament! It was fun and successful and I had a lot of fun with it. We also did a raffle giveaway. I raised enough money to buy a volleyball pole system and volleyballs.
