We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Candace Cole a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Candace thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
I don’t take as many vacations as I would like to take but there is an annual family trip that I look forward to the most. Every summer, my family spends a weekend at the beach catching up with each other, listening to music, laughing, playing, and eating good seafood. It’s an awesome moment in time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After I finished grad school, I was so eager to find more ways to reach people looking to improve how they cope with life. Individual counseling is scientifically proven, but what other ways are we practicing coping skills in our day-to-day lives? It can be the simplest things like the scent of a candle or reading a positive message that can help distract us from daily triggers. In 2018, I created TheraMe, but a greater opportunity presented itself during the tragic COVID-19 pandemic where I was able to focus more time on TheraMe’s development and direction. Instead of buying candles in bulk and reselling them, I began learning the craft myself. Not only am I a Master’s level counselor, I am also a candle maker. TheraMe has handcrafted soy-coconut wax aromatherapy candles, essential oils, sensory toys, mental health greeting cards, and inspiring t-shirts. I’m proud of myself for finding time to work on another passion of mine and still grow, learn, and manage my career as a counselor.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are certain theories that have made an impact on me. I believe myself to be a client-centered (also known as person-centered) counselor, and I also take a person centered approach in providing product/service. The idea is to put more focus on the person instead of the problem. You can even say that I draw from the cognitive behavioral approach to helping the target audience deal with everyday stressors as well.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
TheraMe’s products are available on our website domain therameproducts.com and I am currently working on updating the Instagram page @_therame_ to begin selling on ig again.
