We were lucky to catch up with Canae Blackmon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Canae thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I saw on social media about a “pop up market” and I honestly had no idea what is was, but I decided to attend. I took a couple of accessories that I was selling with me in my back pack, and as I was meeting people I was also giving out my business card. One woman that I met let me know about other markets and said that she wished I had some of the things that I offer with me. To her surprise, I had some lip gloss tubes in my backpack and pulled them out for her to see! She told me that I was doing an awesome job and to keep up with good work. I had now completed my first business sale and was so happy.
Canae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Canae and I am a 9 year old business owner. One day I was watching tv and saw how other kids were playing with things and came up with the idea that I told would like to make kids smile also. I told my mom my idea and she looked into ways to make a logo so that I could start my business. We came up with JayBee because my nickname is Jelly Bean and I wanted to sell kids accessories. In August 2020 my business became registered and I had my first LLC. I enjoy going to markets speaking to others about my business and learning about theirs. Everyone offering advice and making connections is really nice. Some people have even asked if I could have some of my things sold in their store, and that made me really happy. I hope that one day I could have my own store and do the same for others.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My audience on social media isn’t really big, but what I am leaning is that TikTok and Reels with a popular song helps to attract more people to your different social medias and website.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think being consistent helps with clientele. Those that have purchased from me return, and word of mouth is so important. Friends of clients have purchased from me because their friend enjoyed my hair care, or their littles ones enjoyed my accessories, and now I have launched a snack shack.
