We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Can We Talk Music a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Can We thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I definitely wish I created Can We Talk Music sooner. The brand is currently three years old, but I can only imagine where it would have been if I started it when I initially had the vision arise in my head. The only reason I didn’t push to start Can We Talk Music earlier is because I was still dabbling in songwriting and didn’t want to blur the two lines, but something told me Can We Talk Music was my true calling. It may have been more beneficial to have started back then, considering I was around the artists and celebrities I write about, now, but it can all come full circle. I won’t dwell on when I started, I’m just glad I started and I am currently growing the brand I was meant to build!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always been a music head. Music was, is and forever will be life to me. Not only listening and being a fan of music, but analyzing the music, breaking down what makes the song what and why. Even when I was living in Los Angeles and writing music, my music debates, whether it be in real life or on social media, would always have people telling me I should do media or a podcast. Of course, at the time, I thought songwriting was my calling. Coming back to Orlando, I just felt there was a void in regards to music media (no disrespect to any that may have been doing it, I just hadn’t come across it), and I wanted to help fill that void. We have all the talent in the world in this city, but not necessarily the outlets to showcase it and I wanted to be a catalyst in doing so.
During the quarantine periods of the pandemic, we put together an RnB competition to showcase our talented RnB artists that never really got the light or recognition they deserved. If new followers/fans take nothing else from what I want this brand to do, I want them to understand that I’ll always want what’s best for our artists. Creating new ways to showcase your abilities and build them up whether it be through praise or opinionated, constructive criticism. I want us all to win!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I wouldn’t say I have an “end goal” for Can We Talk Music, but when asked about goals. I always say I’d love to be signed to a network such as Revolt, Charlamagne Tha God’s “The Black Effect” Podcast Network or even BET (if they open their doors more to the music media side again). Platforms that I can not only grow with, but learn from, because of the greats in the industry that work hand in hand with said brands.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’m not one who needs the praise or the accolades and public acknowledgement, but I won’t deny that it feels great to get those random messages saying “man, this brand/platform is so dope.” Or after interviewing an artist, they leave saying “this was probably the most fun I’ve ever had doing an interview.” It’s always a good boost to know that I’ve created something that people enjoy, and I just want to keep growing to spread that joy further and further.
