We were lucky to catch up with Camisha Perren recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Camisha, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk that I took during this journey was taking a leap in faith during Covid-19 to open up my own business. As a college student, a mother, a teacher, and a wife, I already had a lot of responsibilities at the time. But regardless of the obstacles, I knew what I wanted to achieve and my family and friends encouraged me each step of the way. I spent countless hours planning every detail of my business. Because there were so many small candle businesses springing up due to Covid, I wanted to make sure my brand stood out and truly represented who I am as a person.

Camisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, my name is Camisha Perren and I am the owner of Sequoia by Misha. In 2020, I wanted to create a brand that would provide safer, natural products to consumers. I then found my joy in making all natural soy wax candles and included my Indian heritage into my designs. The one thing that I appreciate the most when it comes to my business is the honest feed back from clients. When I first started selling my candles I felt really anxious about whether people would actually like them or not. To my surprise every event I would go to I would nearly sell out! I am truly proud of myself for not becoming discouraged when I wasn’t sure if I could really make a business from creating candles.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my social media was a struggle for me in the beginning because social media is not something I focus a lot of time on. However, I knew that it was an easy platform to promote my business. When it comes to building an audience, consistency is key. I would make a goal of posting at least twice a week on instagram and tik tok. Many of my out of state customers have found me from social media so I can at least say that social media has a huge impact on your clientele.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
When I first started selling my products online I was using a platform called weebly. However, the cost was taking more from my budget and at the time because of Covid shipping fees were high, which impacted my online sells. I then switched to Etsy and I do not regret it! Their platform is easy to use and keeps track of all purchases made in person and online.
