We recently connected with Camilo Rodriguez and have shared our conversation below.
Camilo , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most significant project I have worked on has been to belong to the band of internationally recognized artists such as Guaynaa or Sebastian Yatra, to know everything that is behind a concert and to value the work of each person who is behind and in front of the stage. Many hours of rehearsal, many tests, valuing the time of each person with whom you are working; that makes such a big project very significant for me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been in the music industry for about 20 years, I’m a drummer and percussionist. I started when I was 16 years old, the love for percussion and drums took my attention thanks to my family. I was from a very young age surrounded by live music. Since I was 20 years old I have always been involved on big stages and in different cities around the world. I have worked with several latin artists as a session musician and also to tour with them. I’m a current member of the latin grammy awards and have belonged to great projects of highly recognized artists such as Guaynaa, Sebastian Yatra, Tu Rockcito (winners of the latin grammy award for best children’s album). I have achieved all this thanks to the discipline and study that I dedicate to each project, the artists know that they can count on me for my professionalism and dedication. I’m a very versatile musician for different musical genres such as latin music and also anglo music. I am currently on an international tour of several countries with the artist Guaynaa, and in some personal projects as a music producer making my own music with my project called Coconut Project.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think that the most rewarding aspect as an artist is to be valued with great comments for the way you do your work, and that what you do and are passionate about is paid. It is very gratifying for me to know so many places, cities, countries thanks to music. So many cultures around the world.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A moment in my life that I had to pivot was when I decided to leave my country to seek a better future. It is not easy to start practically from the beginning when you arrive in a new country, because you have to meet people, start attending all kinds of events so that people know about you. For me, the key word was “patience” because I knew it would take a little time to stabilize in the United States, but I value every process I went through to get to where I am now. We must take advantage of every day, every moment of life to give our best as people, as professionals; and not waste the great opportunities that come every day.
