We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Camille Uribe . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Camille below.
Camille, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Ever since early childhood, music was woven into the fabric of my upbringing in many ways. My mom was my first piano teacher and both she and my dad instilled a love of music in our home. I am a very classically trained pianist and harpist, and my older brother is an extremely talented musician in a very organic, NON classically trained way. And I remember feeling in awe of him and also very inferior to him in many ways because of his natural ability to write music. I would write music here and there, but I sort of came to the conclusion that I should stay in my lane because I would never be able to have a gift like he did. Fast forward years and years later, I am married with three young daughters (at the time) and going through some really tough things. The only way I could get through some days is by listening to a few songs that really grounded me on repeat. It was during this time that I had music and lyrics come to my mind pretty clearly. I spent a few weeks singing the words and melody until I had this feeling that I needed to finish the song and share it. The perfectionist in me balked at the idea of putting any part of myself out there in such a vulnerable way. But as a person of faith, I also knew this was God calling me to share what He had given me, even if it was to help share my music to the one person that needed something to hold on to like I held on to music during such a dark time in my life.
Camille, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As someone who wears a lot of hats, maybe more than I should most of the time, I am so proud and happy that my wife and mom “hats” really aren’t hats at all because they never come off and it’s who I always am. My husband and I live in a small Utah town with our four incredible daughters. I hope that the other hats that I do wear encourage my girls to work towards worthwhile goals. I’ve worn my musician hat for as long as I can remember, but stepping into a new role as a Christian songwriter has been exciting, rewarding, and such a learning experience.
Right after starting my YouTube channel and released my first music video, I started to collaborate with my mom because she’s a talented lyricist. She writes many of the lyrics to my songs and is a great sounding board for music ideas. As a Christian songwriter, my niche is really in finding the people who want to buy my sheet music to perform in their church services and other religious settings from my music videos.
I think one of the things that sets me apart in the music industry is my commitment to my faith in Jesus Christ. I am learning new things all the time about how to improve the production and distribution of my music. But the most important thing to me is that I am successful in helping those who hear my music to feel the peace that only comes from Jesus.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It is always rewarding when I receive messages or emails from people who are resonating with the music, that it has helped heal a part of their heart. I recently had a request for one of my songs to be translated into German, and to hear about the groups that are learning the song and loving it is truly heartwarming.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Sometimes your creative trajectory has to change, and sometimes it has to happen in order for another good thing to enter your life. Last year I was stoked to work on a bunch of new music and I decided to write less in order to take on a big and unexpected responsibility. It wasn’t what I had planned or even hoped for, but in the end it became a big blessing for me, my family, and those for whom I took it on in the first place.
