We were lucky to catch up with Camille Sevigny recently and have shared our conversation below.
Camille, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
While I have been a DJ for the past 20 years, I always wanted to produce music. Back when I felt like I might be able to begin producing music I felt that it was cost prohibitive. The computers used to make music were almost exclusively Macs and the top software was only available on Mac computers as well. That combination was very expensive. I ended up tabling the idea of producing music for the time being and started a family instead. Since then the ability to make music has become much more affordable and accessible. I am glad that I waited as long as I did to begin this journey and don’t regret waiting until now to pursue this adventure.
Camille, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a DJ for well over 20 years based in the Washington, DC metro area. I came up toward the end of the “rave” heydays beginning in 1996. I fell in love with dance music after high school and purchased a pair of turntable shortly after. I sought out any opportunity to attend dance music events and get to know other likeminded individuals. When I began DJing I fell in love with the House music scene which included French House and Disco House. There are many genres of dance music but House music will always be my home. I am blessed to have played clubs, parties, and venues up and down the East Coast as well as other cities across the US over the years. I recently began producing my own music with my first release just after the new year in 2023. I have released 6 tracks on 5 different labels thus far with another 4 or so to be released later this year. As a new producer I am still finding my sound, so to speak, but I am a huge fan of Disco and Disco samples so I try to incorporate that into my music as much as possible. I am fortunate to live in an area that is robust with dance music events and venues that cater to dance music. There is almost always some type of dance music event most days of the week in the Washington, DC metro area. With the accessibility of DJing as well as producing music, the field of artists is increasingly crowded and it’s difficult to make an impression but I think that given enough time I will leave a mark on the dance music community one way or another. I am excited and look forward to what’s in store for me next.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is a full time job. Anyone who has spent any time with any social media platform probably already knows this. Like just about any artist today, social media is a necessity to building a successful brand. I wish there were other easier ways to accomplish this, but the world we live in demands that you have a presence and following on almost every social media platform. I am currently learning for myself how to build a brand and following using social media. I am working at it but I am nowhere near the status of the social elites despite my best efforts. Regardless of where I am now, I work every day to engage with those who I want to connect with online with the goal to build a meaningful community who are as invested in my music as I am. My only advice is that you should filter out the noise and focus on your craft without letting any possible negativity bring you down. Don’t judge yourself and your worth based on what others are doing online.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is very simple. Make music that I love and share it with anyone who will listen to it. That’s it. It’s that simple. I am not here to be famous, I am not here to get rich. I love dance music and as long as making music makes me happy I plan to continue. My journey has just begun and I can’t wait to see how far I can take it.
