We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camille Serrano a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Camille, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

Growing up, I often felt lost – lost in society’s expectations, family trauma, and understanding my sexual orientation.

During adolescence, I learned about astrology. What made me fall in love with astrology is how personalized it is based on one’s date of birth, time, and location. For the first time, I felt heard without saying any words. I started accepting parts of myself that I was shamed for and I started implementing solutions in my every day life that were recommended in my astrological birth chart.

Too often we hear folks saying “mercury is in retrograde!” When a planet is in retrograde, it means the planet moving in its orbit. I named the business Retrograde Readings because retrograde planets show up in people’s charts all the time. This doesn’t mean you are bound to adversity. Retrograde Readings believes retrogrades can be overcome and we offer sustainable solutions on how to do so.

Camille, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?

The best source of new clients has been through word of mouth. After every appointment, we follow up with our clients to check-in with how they are doing or answer any lingering questions. This bridge of communication opens the door for references. Clients of Retrograde Readings leave the space feeling empowered and have enthusiastically referred our service to their network of friends, family, and/or coworkers. We are incredibly grateful for the growing support of our AAPI queer, woman-owned business!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

We’ve built an audience on social media by creating and posting #RetrogradeReadings memes every week. Most of our followers are millennial and a part of Generation Z, so we had to craft our content to meet the interests of our followers.

Moreover, we use social media to promote discounts and showcase the scholarship fund we created. With the cost of education skyrocketing, we created a the Helen The Healer Scholarship Fund to help close accessibility gaps in obtaining higher education. A portion of all revenue goes toward this scholarship we intend to renew annually. Social media has been incredible in spreading the word.
