We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camille Klein a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Camille, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I have taken many risks in my life, but one of the biggest ones is still ongoing. Choosing to become a photographer has been a significant risk for me. Let me provide some backstory. I grew up in a small farming community in North Dakota, with a population of less than 3,000 people, and the closest “city” was an hour away.
Growing up, I was never surrounded by artists; it wasn’t until high school that I started to fall in love with creating. My passion began with drawing, painting, and working with clay. In 12th grade, I picked up my first DSLR camera. When I realized I was afraid of pursuing painting—my first love—I turned toward photography. There were a few professional photographers in my town whom I admired, and they seemed to be making a good living from their craft.
Not really knowing what I was getting myself into, I decided to go to college for photography in hopes of making a living out of it. I graduated with my photography and digital imaging degree in 2017 from a community college in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Moving to Minnesota was a huge step for me. I didn’t know anyone there, and it was my first time living in a city. I had spent my entire life on my family farm in North Dakota and suddenly found myself living downtown in a high-rise in Minneapolis. It was both life-changing and scary. I was one of only three people from my graduating class to leave North Dakota for college. People typically don’t leave; I took that leap.
After graduating, I decided I wanted to live somewhere warmer so I could create outside year-round. In the spring of 2018, I moved to Austin, Texas, once again without knowing anyone, but following my heart and pursuing photography. However, it was challenging. I was not confident and wrestled with many insecurities and anxieties. Building a photography career without a network is incredibly difficult.
The summer of 2020 marked a turning point for me; I started to build a community. It takes time, but now, five years later, I am finally starting to feel more established. I remain committed to staying consistent and never giving up because I know this is my calling. The journey has been challenging, navigating my way, paving my path, and doing all the things it takes to be a business owner while learning along the way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Here’s an improved version of your answer with corrections and enhancements for clarity and flow:
I am a professional freelance photographer specializing in brand, lifestyle, retreat, and wedding photography. My work is dedicated to capturing authentic stories, creating images that inspire connection, and showcasing the unique essence of my clients and their brands.
With years of experience behind the lens, my approach is rooted in professionalism, creativity, and an eye for detail. Whether I’m crafting compelling visual narratives for businesses, documenting transformative retreats, or celebrating love stories through weddings, I deliver timeless, high-quality imagery that resonates.
In addition to photography, I have a background in energy healing and yoga. I host an event called ACTIVATED, which is a women’s portrait photography and meditation experience. I designed these events to create a safe space for women to heal, dream, be fully seen in their power, and receive beautiful images in the process. I have hosted over 11 events so far and am excited to continue offering them in the Austin area. These events also make a great addition to a healing retreat.
What sets me apart is my unique blend of photography and holistic wellness. I understand the importance of creating a comfortable environment for my clients, allowing their true selves to shine through in their portraits. I am most proud of the lasting connections I build with my clients and the profound transformations that occur during my sessions and events.
I want potential clients to know that my passion lies in celebrating authenticity and empowering others through my artistry. Whether it’s through individual portrait sessions or larger events, my goal is to help people feel seen and valued while providing them with stunning imagery they’ll cherish for a lifetime.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As a women’s photographer, my mission is to empower women to step into their most confident, magnetic, and authentic selves. I believe that every woman possesses a unique beauty and strength that deserves to be celebrated and showcased. My creative journey is driven by a profound commitment to helping women embrace their individuality and express their true selves through compelling imagery.
In a world where societal standards often dictate how women should appear and behave, I strive to create an environment that encourages vulnerability and authenticity. I understand that many women struggle with self-image and confidence, and my goal is to provide a supportive space where they can let go of their insecurities. Through my lens, I aim to capture the essence of each individual, highlighting their unique qualities and strengths.
My work extends beyond simply taking photographs; it’s about creating a narrative that inspires and resonates with the audience. I want my clients to see themselves in a light they may have never considered—radiant, empowered, and capable of achieving their dreams. As I guide them through the photography experience, I encourage them to connect with their inner selves, helping them realize the potential they hold not only in front of the camera but in all aspects of their lives.
Additionally, I offer workshops and events, such as ACTIVATED, where I combine portrait photography with meditation and self-discovery practices. These gatherings are designed to foster community among women while providing a transformative experience that fuels personal growth and fosters creative expression. By facilitating connections within a supportive environment, I hope to help women build their brands and grow their audiences, utilizing their newfound confidence to shine both online and offline.
Ultimately, my mission is to illuminate the beauty of women’s stories and experiences through my photography, helping them recognize that they are deserving of love and admiration—both from themselves and from the world. I aspire to be a catalyst for change in how women perceive themselves, encouraging a culture of mutual support and empowerment. Through my work, I hope to inspire women to embrace their authenticity and pursue their passions courageously, knowing that they are truly enough just as they are.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Hosting my first event was a huge risk. I had no idea if women would be interested or if I even had a big enough audience to sell tickets. The idea for my ACTIVATED events came to me in a vision while I was in the bath—I saw a space where women felt deeply supported in community, dreamed big, and radiated confidence in front of the camera.
Despite my doubts, I put it out there, and to my surprise, the event sold out within 48 hours. My second one? Gone in 24 hours. That’s when I knew—I was onto something powerful.
