Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Camille Garrigues. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Camille, appreciate you joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My mom taught me the invaluable lesson that how your life feels is far more important than how it looks.
From a young age, my mom taught me by example that an abundant, fulfilling, and joyful life has little to do with money and material things and everything to do with cultivating joy in daily life, following your heart, soul & intuition, and paying close attention to how your life feels.
My mom is a rare breed in that she is truly unmotivated by money. She raised my brother and I as a stay-at-home mom while my father worked as a corporate attorney. She felt a calling to go back to school once my brother and I were older and graduated with a PsyD in Psychology in her mid-fifties.
That was extremely inspiring to me because she wasn’t one of the many who lets their age get in the way of following their dreams and soul’s purpose. My mom is a constant inspiration to me & the strongest person I know.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
If you had told me five years ago that I’d now be starting my own business as a nutritionist helping people clear their acne holistically, I would have laughed in your face. As I believe is common with many entrepreneurs, the path to launching my business has been convoluted and confusing, but also extremely liberating and empowering.
Throughout college and into my mid-twenties, I really struggled with my skin. I had relentless hormonal acne on my chin and jawline that wouldn’t seem to go away no matter what I tried. The worst part about it was the way that I allowed it to impact my self-esteem, self-worth, and mental health. I went to countless dermatologists and tried everything from birth control to topical creams to oral antibiotics, and nothing worked. In fact, everything seemed to make it worse. And when my dermatologist in college recommended I try Accutane, that was the last straw for me. I knew there was something deeper going on and I was determined to heal holistically.
I’ve always been drawn to nutrition and wellness. After graduating I connected with a holistic esthetician who really opened my eyes to all the ways that diet, lifestyle, supplements, and skincare products can impact your skin. I spent the next several years, from about 2018 to 2020, trying different diets, products, and healing modalities until I eventually achieved completely clear skin – something I believed for many years that I would never have.
During the pandemic it became clear to me that it’s part of my soul’s mission to help people clear their acne from the inside out like I was able to do. So, I went back to school for nutrition and completed my certification as an Integrative Health Practitioner in the fall of 2021.
I’ve created a 12-Week Clear Skin Program where I work with clients one-on-one to get to the root cause of their acne and help them heal from the inside out through holistic nutrition and wellness. I’m extremely grateful to have found this path where I’m able to help people heal on a deeper level.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I graduated college in 2017, I had no direction and no clue what I wanted to do. I chose to major in business administration because it seemed like a broad, safe choice. I got a job at a marketing agency doing search engine optimization and I disliked it from the very beginning. But I had bills and student loans to pay, so I didn’t really see another option. I was the queen of risk avoidance and playing small, although I didn’t see that at the time.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, it was the first time I had the time and space to really think about my life and what I wanted to create. I found an online, self-paced nutrition program that I was able to work on at night after my full-time job. I spent the next year, from fall of 2020 to fall of 2021, working full-time and studying at night. I was exhausted all the time and knew this schedule wasn’t sustainable.
I distinctly remember one Sunday night in July of 2021, I was working on a performance report for one of my clients at the marketing agency. I had come down with a cold earlier that week from the stress I was under. As I was sitting there at my computer, I got one of the strongest intuitive messages I’ve ever received… the best way I can describe it is it was like a full body knowing coming from my gut saying: “QUIT.”
I knew in that moment that I had to release the marketing job and I gave my notice later that week. I trusted in my intuitive knowing and surrendered to stepping into the unknown. For me, this was a big lesson in release. Your life and business can’t open up and fully unfold until you release what’s no longer in alignment.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
By far the most effective strategy for growing my client base has been partnering with aligned businesses that are already established.
I recently partnered with a holistic and non-toxic skincare company called Clearstem Skincare. Their products are specifically created for people who struggle with acne, which is my ideal client. Since they’re a well-established brand that has built trust with their community over the years, this has given my business a very helpful boost.
