We recently connected with Camille Evans and have shared our conversation below.
Camille, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
I am the oldest of 5 children and come from a single mother. I was raised by mother and retired grandmother who used to take me to her part time jobs with me. She taught me work ethic early on and to have ambition in whatever it is you do. She went from a high paid government worker to a Hallmark worker that simply filled the cards at local grocery stores. She made me work for my allowance which in turn taught me hard work always pays off at any level, and that no matter the job you can always learn something to apply it to other aspects of your life. My grandmother is a millionaire now and my mother is retired now as well living the dream of taken on small projects that pay just as much as she did when working for the government too. I am first generation entrepreneur in my family now and my brother has followed my footsteps.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into this industry post college graduating and being a single mother. I had to pivot tremendously to balance my new life as a mother. I found my passion in makeup from a colleague who said my makeup was always pretty. Now 14 years later in my career, I now have my own brow products sold in stores. I belong to a Los Angeles based agency and apart of the Local 706 Union. I can afford myself to fully pursue makeup as my career for my family. I am most proud of my work ethic and capabilities to never give up. I have a supportive village that has helped me see my dreams through.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Prior to me solely working in the beauty industry, I was a a teacher as well to special needs children and adults. I would work at schools during the day and the makeup counter in the evenings. I also enrolled in esthetician school too to further my education until I could afford to freelance fully and only do makeup which has been for the past 6 years.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I realized after working behind the counter for about 6 years of my career I had outgrown the passion for selling. Retail was never my strong suit and I knew for me all I wanted to was makeup so I needed to spread my wings and do just that. I begin to rent out my own studio and build clients from there. After becoming an esthetician, I was able to add more services to my website and focused on just being able to work in my studio and was successful for the next 8 years to date.
