We were lucky to catch up with Camille Charbonneau recently and have shared our conversation below.
Camille, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
I’ve always been a one-person show when it comes to managing my illustration career. However, recently, I was approached by an incredible agency based in Montreal that specializes in guiding artists through their journey. Having previously collaborated with them, I already had a strong trust in their abilities. So, I made the decision to sign with them. Working alongside this agency not only inspires me but also alleviates some of the pressures of handling clients and the business side of things. Their support enables me to take my career to the next level, opening doors to projects and opportunities that I wouldn’t have had access to on my own. It’s truly been a game-changer for me.
Camille, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi ! I’m LaCharbonne aka Camille Charbonneau. I’m a muralist, illustrator and designer based in Montreal with a passion bordering on obsession for pink and geometric shapes.
My illustration style is a vibrant celebration of joy, featuring bright colors, playful shapes, and whimsical compositions inspired by nature and the world around me. With vibrant color palettes and dynamic compositions, each piece invites viewers into a lighthearted and imaginative world, spreading positivity and capturing the beauty of our surroundings.
My career path began with a deep dive into the world of graphic design during my university years, where I worked on my technical skills and learned the fundamentals of visual communication. Transitioning into freelance work right after graduation, I explored both graphic design and illustration projects, quickly realizing my passion lay more in the latter. As I felt more creativity and more gratification from illustration, I made a decision to shift my focus away from graphic design. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of expanding my practice to include mural work, a very exciting opportunity that brings my illustrations to life in vibrant, real-world settings. Through the years, I’ve not only painted on walls but also on a piano, an ice rink, a school bus, bikes and even a city bus! This journey of self-discovery and creative evolution has been so rewarding, shaping me into the professional illustrator I am today.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe that fostering a supportive environment begins with inspiring and aiding one another. Establishing communities among fellow artists offers invaluable opportunities for exchange and mutual learning. Moreover, the creation of accessible spaces dedicated to exploring diverse mediums and styles encourages experimentation and innovation. It’s also crucial for larger institutions, including government bodies and businesses, to actively integrate art into their spaces and initiatives. By prioritizing collaboration, accessibility, and inclusion, society can cultivate a thriving creative ecosystem that benefits artists, creatives, and the broader community alike.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In my creative journey, my main mission is to shake things up and add a splash of color to life. With every project, I’m on a mission to fight off the dullness of everyday life and inject some fun into the mix. Life can get pretty boring sometimes, you know? But through my art, I aim to bring moments of unexpected joy and excitement, making people pause and appreciate the present moment a bit more. So yeah, you could say I’m on a mission to keep things interesting and make the world a little more vibrant, one project at a time!
