We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camille Campbell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Camille, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I absolutely wish I had started my business earlier, but I let fear hold me back for years. My initial business that i started was a Nutrition Coaching business and I literally had had the idea for it about 5 years prior, but I talked myself out of it. “Who on earth would pay me for Nutrition Coaching advice? I’m not qualified for that and it will take far too much time to GET qualified for it, so I won’t even bother to start.” All total nonsense.
Funny enough, the pandemic is what caused me to just take the leap! I had been working full time as a teacher, which was in no way my passion but worked for me because based on my family life the timing worked best for me to able to take care of my daughter. Then the pandemic hit, and I was so unceremoniously fired from the school (the entire staff was!) with very little communication, that it made me think… I never want to go through that horrible experience again. The pay was ok at first, but then the amount of stress that was induced from the work, made the pay feel abysmal. Then to be fired in that way… I said forget it. I want to do my own thing. And so i just dove in head first. I started a social media account and I started researching online qualification programs I could enroll in to become a certified Nutrition Coach. While going through the program, I started learning more about how social media worked, and decided that that would be my primary tool for finding clients and marketing my business. Fast forward two years later and I’m happy to say I have a petite but engaged community, I’ve pivoted my business successfully and have truly been building the life of my dreams.
I recently started hiring designers and decided immediately that I would be the type of boss I always wanted to be and it’s been going great so far! I wish I had started sooner because imagine where I’d be now! But also… maybe everything happens for a reason and there’s something to be said about divine timing? I don’t know if I’d have been as resilient 5 years ago if I had started my business back then. Entrepreneurship has so many ups and downs, and if I had started back then I may have quit easily on a downturn. Now I know that downturns are just redirects, an opportunity to make an adjustment in how I’m operating or where my focus is. So… maybe it all happened at the right time?

Camille, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey there! I’m Camille, the Lead Designer and founder at Nutrition.DesignLab. I’m from Jamaica, I love to travel, eat, drink coffee and I’ve been design obsessed for as long as I can remember. I studied to be a Graphic Designer, then an Architect, then an Urban Designer, and after getting a Bachelor’s Degree & 2 Master’s Degrees in the design world… I decide to be a stay at home mom. And then a freelancer. And then a teacher. And then a Nutrition Coach. And then finally… we arrived here! I realized that my true passion lies in helping badass women entrepreneurs build their businesses through design. So Nutrition.DesignLab was born – the PERFECT culmination of all my passions (oh and my parents are pretty pleased to hear I’m using those degrees again!)
As a graphic designer, architect, and nutrition enthusiast, I bring a unique perspective when I’m working with female entrepreneurs. My mission is to empower female entrepreneurs by creating visually captivating branding & implementing efficient backend systems. I specialize in working with women at 2 different levels of their business journey. For those in the early stages, I’ll help you build a brand from scratch, ensuring you start off on the right footing. For experienced, driven entrepreneurs, I’ll take care of the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on the bigger picture and growing your business.
I’ll design a website for your business that captures your ideal clients attention and converts lurkers into loyal clients. My goal is to free up your time, allowing you to continue growing your business without the stress of worrying about how your landing page looks, or worrying if your emails look like they came from a Big girl business. By leveraging my background in graphic design, architecture, and nutrition coaching, I’ll craft a brand and online presence that truly represents you.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Just keep showing up and start reaching out and making connections with others in your industry, but do your best to make them genuine connections. Don’t cold DM someone with a large following and ask them to do a live with you. Build a relationship with them via DM’S organically (if you truly enjoy their content!) and then eventually, go live with them and discuss something pertinent to both your brands. This really helped me grow my following several times over, paired with consistently showing up daily. Treat social media like it’s a legitimate part of your business, not just a silly little place to waste time.
