We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Camille Calvin . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Camille below.
Camille , appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I do take vacations. I think a good vacation where you can forget your responsibilities at least a few times a year is necessary. Otherwise, how on earth do you recharge? Now, because of my line of work, I often find myself in situations where I have to take work with me even when I go on vacations. For the most part, I can get away for a couple of weeks without any responsibilities. But as it tends to happen in life, I’ll have to do a quick Self-tape or recording while I’m away, and of course, that comes with running lines and rehearsing. Whenever a great acting opportunity comes up you never want to turn it down. Not if it’s great. So yes, there have been a few times where I’ve had to forgo the day tour or lying on the beach so that I can submit a self-tape or make that zoom call. If you’re the backbone of your business and you don’t feel like it’s possible to get away. It’s important to find a solution for that. Maybe you have to learn to delegate more or find a time of the year where business is slow, but the show can’t go on without you, so you have to continue to fill your cup so that you can over pour your brilliance into your business. Otherwise, your risk burning out.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Camille Calvin and I am a film actress and producer. I’ve starred in a number of independent films, and have produced a few. I first got my start doing a few modeling jobs, and then a few music videos which lead to my first film project. Once I took my first acting class it was over. It was like something just clicked, and I knew that this is where I belong. And ever since then I’ve been in love with the entire story making process.
Today Im an award winning Actress and Director. Best known for starring in the Lifetime film “Deadly Cheers” playing the role of Brianna. I’m also known for my work on the film “Desire Lines”, where I was awarded “Best Actress” at the Film Invasion LA Film Festival by: Discover Indie Films for my portrayal of character Honey Zeal.
I was also lucky enough to be recognized as a director at the Independent Talents International film festival and the Film Invasion LA film festival for my short film Lightning Strikes. And my short film, In the Clouds, at the New Filmmakers festival L.A. in the LGBT category. And recognized as a music video director at the Other Venice Film Festival for the music Video “In the Middle”
It’s been great so far. I’m still working towards bringing more great stories to the forefront.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best source of new clients has always been through word of mouth. I have done countless auditions, and countless interviews a lot of them are just hit and miss because I am in one of the most competitive businesses there is. But when you’ve worked with someone and have developed a meaningful relationship, that often extends to working with each other again. and that’s the best thing about this business because ultimately you end up working with people that you like and that you get along. At least in my experience. And when you can get on with the people you’re working with then you guys come together and build some thing creatively, it’s a it’s an exhilarating experience. At least when all the grunt of the work is done and you look back at what you’ve built, it’s exhilarating.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started out, looking for a job as an act, Finding roles were difficult. I remember it was hard to even find jobs to submit to. I could probably count on one hand, the number of Castings that were looking for black women in the course of the week. And these roles were often just bad caricatures, a false portrayal of a black woman. It was always just so outlandish and just not an important part of the story, but always being the comedic relief of the story. So the only way that I knew how to change that and to try to open doors for myself, was to create small projects on a small budget that I was able to fund myself. , For the first time I wrote the roles that I wanted to see myself playing, so I did that a few times, and from these projects I got some recognition in film festivals but also I was able to put together a pretty decent audition reel for myself. The reel is what got me my first agent. Not only did it get me an agent, but it also got me a few of my future jobs. There were a few times where I got an acting job and the Director has told me that they saw my project and that’s what made them hire me for the job. So when the traditional path was not working for me, I decided to pivot. Those roles that I felt misrepresented and put me in a box, just didn’t feel right. I had to trust my gut and give myself permission to try something different. Which worked out well. I learned quickly that you have to trust your vision for yourself.
