We recently connected with Camille Brady Buckingham and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Camille, thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for CAMI AND JAX, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

My sister, Jackie Brady Rohm, and I were born and raised in Hawaii as competitive surfers. As surfers and athletes we always saw a gap in the marketplace for swimwear that actually stayed on while you were performing your sport. We knew if we could start a brand that bridged the gap between fashion and function we would be successful. The heart of our brand is the ocean and surfing so we knew if we stayed true to ourselves it would go well. We always knew that being sisters and our connection with each other and using both of our strengths we would make something really special.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My sister Jackie got her degree in apparel design and production management and I received a degree in communications. We collaborate on most areas in our business but she focuses more on the design aspect and I am more involved with the business/marketing side of things. We make a great team! After graduation we went on a surf trip to Bali. While in Bali we were so inspired by the culture, the place and the people and wanted to figure out a way that we can make Bali a part of our lives. Through a mutual friend, we got in contact with a manufacture and we quickly realized that we can trust her and her team and would be able to start a business from Bali.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

Consistency. Being authentic. Staying true to our core values and why we started in the first place.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?

Word of mouth is by far the best source of new clients. It is the best marketing we have found. People are influenced by their community and people they trust and love. It is more powerful than ads because you can feel the authenticity.
