We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Camilla Gratton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Camilla below.
Camilla , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I grew up in a household filled with music. My parents were both in the industry so I was exposed to many aspects of the music industry at a young age. I had tried musical theater as a kid and then really got into choir in middle and high school. Then I decided I wanted to keep pursuing music in college. All of those things affected my choice to pursue music professionally but, I still remember the exact moment that I decided I wanted to do it. It was October of 2019 and I was at the Crypto.com Arena, previously known as the Staples Center. I had gone to see my Dad at work because the artist he was currently working with was performing there. I was sitting in his office when he asked if I wanted to see the stage before they opened the doors and I said yes. We were walking through the corridor around the building to go find the stage entrance. I was so excited to see the stage design and the arena before it was filled with thousands of people. We walked out and the emptiness was echoing. He asked if we wanted to go on the stage, that was an obvious yes. We walked on the stage and that’s when it happened. I was standing towards the front of the stage and everything went silent. It was like I could see in 360 view. I heard nothing and saw everything. It was so clear. I needed to be up on that stage one day. That is when I knew I not only wanted to pursue this career but I needed to.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always had a love for music, more specifically singing. I dabbled in theater as a kid but found a real love for singing in choir throughout middle school and high school. When graduating high school and trying to figure out where I wanted to go to college I knew I wanted to study music. Now I am currently enrolled in a music college and write, record and release my own original music. I am forever grateful to my school for giving me the opportunity to grow as an artist and to connect with my peers who are also pursuing various fields in the music industry.
I aim to always keep it real and honest in my music. I like the vulnerability and sharing my experiences with others. All I want as an artist is for people to find relatability and comfort within my music. I write about love, friendship, internal struggles, and more. I always aim to push myself creatively with my writing while also letting my emotions and mind flow freely.
I started releasing music in June of 2023. My first single is called “be a better man”. I wrote “be a better man” in a time when I felt my emotions were really being taken advantage of by a man. I released my second single in August titled “faith”. My most recent single is my third, “self-pity”. This song was definitely the most vulnerable I have felt releasing a song thus far. It is about feeling like you are not being treated with the same love, compassion, and respect as you treat your friends. I wrote this song after a bad night with a friend and I remember just completely crying the whole way home and then getting home and sitting down with my guitar and just word vomiting. I didn’t do a lot of editing to the lyrics of this song because I wanted to stay true to those original raw emotions I let out that night. I just hope that people can listen to these songs that come from the most vulnerable parts of me and feel safe. I also can not go without saying that I wouldn’t be able to have done what I’ve done with my music this last year if it wasn’t for my producer Henry Thrill. His creative brain when it comes to production is unmatched and I am so grateful that he has taken a chance on me.
I think that younger me would be so incredibly proud of where I am today. I am incredibly grateful that I have the support to continue doing what I love to do. As for the near future, you can expect more music this year!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I touched on this point earlier but, for me at least, the most rewarding part of being an artist is when someone relates to your music. I have had people reach out to me saying things like ” I really felt connected to your music”, and simple comments like that make it all worth it. When people tell me they’ve cried to my songs, screamed along to the lyrics and simply just listened and related I feel as though I have already made a difference.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As of more recently I have been trying to focus more on my socials and how they affect my career. I have always been active on Instagram with posts, reels, and stories but, currently the social that I have seen support and grow the most artists today is Tik Tok. I was already on Tik Tok, but recently I have been trying to build my presence on the app more. I have found that the most effective way to gain fans and followers through Tik Tok is to go live. My followers tend to go up as well as my streams when I go live. I go live and sing for a few hours. Some days are better than others in terms of engagement but it’s also just good practice singing to lots of people. There is always room to grow your audience and I hope to continue to do so using social media as a tool.
