We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camilla Behrens a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Camilla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I don’t consider myself successful, but I have experienced moments of success in my career. I have watched people around me become successful. I run my own design studio, and when you are running your own business, you have to create success for yourself.
Be really hardworking.
Be super curious.
Be kind.
Surround yourself with people who are smarter and more successful than yourself.
Work really hard.
Build your network – the best jobs are not posted online.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a strategic creative and brand builder with 10+ years of experience in design and marketing – from concepting to execution on both the agency and brand side. During my time at global talent agency CAA, I led brand creation and brand extensions for clients such as Drew Barrymore, Cirque Du Soleil and Fred Segal, before launching my own design studio, Behrens Studio in 2019.
We partner with clients to build and grow their brands through branding, marketing and product. We play in a variety of industries including fashion, beauty, home, non-profit, fintech and pharmaceutical.

There are a lot of people that do what I do. I’m proud of both being a strong creative and collaborator. No ego. I consider myself a great person to work with, and I work with clients that I enjoy working with.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Most of my clients have found me by word-of-mouth. No paid adds. No big agency behind me. I pride myself on being great to work with, I’m OCD about timelines / deadlines, I over-communicate and try to be flexible and accomendating as project scopes shift around.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I’m jealous of creatives who are entering the job market now. Today there are so many incredible resources online for when you are starting out – whether you are going the full-time or freelance route. LinkedIn have all the job postings you need, and shows salary range and in office/remote requirements. Sites like Working Not Working, Upwork, Fiver and Coroflot are great sites to find full-time + freelance work. Community platforms such as Freelance Founders are a great way to connect and collaborate with other freelancers. Instagram has lots of creators / educators who talk about how to run a successful business. Today it’s all on the internet, you just need to go find it.
