We recently connected with Cami Taleisnik and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cami, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Im an actor, singer and dancer, but I’m also an architect. I thought that theater was just my hobby and I didn’t want to make a living out of that, so I’ve studied architecture. In my country is a 6 years degree. When I was in my 4th year , I won a scholarship to come to the United Stated to do a dance summer intensive at Point Park Pittsburgh, and that totally changed my life. I realized how I wanted that life to be my everyday life. Although I was always taking musical theatre classes on the side while studying architecture, I always felt it was not enough. I didn’t feel enough as an artist because I was not dedicating my whole life to it. But there was something inside (maybe pride) that couldn’t let me quit school. So I came back to my home town, got my degree in architecture and then moved to Buenos Aires to start my artist career. I felt I had “lost” so many years studying a career I didn’t really want to pursue. I always felt I wish I had started earlier..
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve started theater when I was in high school. I joined the drama and choir workshop and that was what I love the most. After high school I got a scholarship and went to study musical theater, but I thought that it was just my hobby so I came back to my hometown, Cordova, to study architecture. in the meanwhile I was Making some musical theater productions in Cordoba. After finishing my six years career, I decided to move to Buenos Aires and started to make a living out of being an artist. I’ve been part of musicals like Shrek, the musical, I’ve starred in different productions of original regional musicals. But the pandemic came, and luckily I was also working as an architect in order to make a living. As soon as everything started to re open, I booked a flight to Mexico and decided to move to Playa del Carmen. In a week I was already singing in restaurants. In a month I’ve already had my own jazz band and in 3 month I was the main female singer of a show tribute to Elvis Presley. After almost a year in Mexico, my path led me to New York, where without really looking for it, I booked my first musical in the United States and luckily I’ve never stopped from one play to another.
As soon as I arrived to this country with my 01 visa, I joined the National Tour of ‘On Your Feet’, and I spent the whole year traveling through the country telling a story that was really related to.
I feel so lucky, but at the same time I know it’s the hard work and the dedication I put to everything I do. It’s my passion that drives me to keep moving, keep auditioning.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when someone shares how touched they were by my performance or by my story.
each time I feel someone is inspired by the story I’m telling or by my own journey, it really touches my heart.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was living in Buenos Aires, and working as an architect for 3 years already. On the side I was, teaching voice lessons, acting classes for kids and teens, taking dance, singing and acting classes, and rehearsing different musicals. All at the same time. But each time I went to the firm I felt I didn’t belong there. After a whole year of lockdown in Buenos Aires, working as an architect and taking as much online classes as I could, I left my partner, my job as an architect, my apartment in Buenos Aires, and I left to Mexico. It was the best decision ever.
I stayed almost a year in Playa del Carmen where I started my yoga training, and I was singing with a jazz band of my own in the best restaurants and hotel of Tulum and Playa del Carmen.
