Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cameryn Hodges. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Cameryn, thanks for joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?

Navigating Hate and Parasocial Relationships

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello Everyone! My name is Cameryn Hodges and I’m currently a recent college graduate in the School of Communication and Media at the University of Illinois at Springfield, Class of 2023

I am a Communications Major with a concentration in Journalism/Media Studies and Visual Arts minor. At UIS, I am honored to be an active leader in multiple clubs that serve my many interests. While in school, I am heavily involved in my campus being apart of over 10 clubs and organizations! I also have my own podcast, blog, and youtube channel that I do as a side hobby & side hustle. Outside of college, I am a Content Creator, YouTuber, Podcaster, Lifestyle Blogger, Author, Artist, Writer, Media Influencer, and Entrepreneur.

I have a YouTube channel, “Cameryn Grace”, with a following of over 3,200 subscribers where I post twice a week, as well as a blog “Cameryn Writes” where I post-college and lifestyle-related content where I post weekly. My blog is a WordPress blog. Also, I run a weekly podcast entitled “Current Talk” with one of my college best friends that current holds 2,600 downloads from 27+ countries where we post weekly. We have been uploading consistently to this podcast on a weekly consistent basis and have interviewed over 50 guests. We discuss college, lifestyle topics, and current events.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

My Content Creation journey began in December 2016, when I was a sophomore in high school. I was a huge fan of my favorite creators that vlogged and record their day to day lives. As I entered high school, I thought it would be fun to document my high school journey on YouTube to look back on in the future. However, it was not at all easy for me. I have experience being heavily bullied for my videos and my channel. I experienced alot of in person and online hate and parasocial relationships with people who I had thought were my friends. I would come home in tears some days just because the hate would be getting that bad. But I still kept pushing and created creative content for not only myself but to prepare me for my future career in the digital world. When I started my channel, I just simply used my iPhone to film, but over time, I invested an a couple high quality cameras to upgrade my video quality. Ever since then I have been consistently creating content on YouTube for now almost 6 full years! Currently, I am happy to saw that I have now reached a point with my self confidence in content creation that allows me to not care what other people think and just creative for myself and my future.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

I am very passionate about social media, graphic design, photography, videography, and the entertainment industry. In future, my dream is to work full-time for The Walt Disney Company as well as continue to purse my social media outlets podcast and blog as side hustle. My biggest aspiration is to not only achieve my goals, but to be an inspiration to others along the way. I want to provide good service to all people always with a positive attitude.
