We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cameron McCarty a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cameron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I have been blessed with the most amazing parents and family one could have. I believe there are so many elements that go into raising children and having a family, and my parents have done a wonderful job of balancing all of the factors.
The first and foremost thing that my parents did was instill a spiritual life into us, a way for us to keep God first and always have that to keep us grounded and well-rounded. They also provided space and support for me to be creative, explore, and embrace whatever unique qualities and interests I had.
In shaping my adulthood and subsequently my career, the most significant gifts they have given me are the tools to be resourceful and independent. My parents have a saying “We gave you wings to fly; not just around the nest, but anywhere.” I always know where home is, but I have been fortunate enough to have the support and wisdom that has allowed me the opportunities to venture out, grow in my career, start a business and overcome adversity along the way.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Cameron McCarty and I am proud native of Jackson, MS. Through college at North Carolina State University and some very fortunate career opportunities, I now live, work, and play in the wonderful city of Durham, NC. I like to say that I am a Broadcast Engineer by trade, a Technical Manager and Producer by profession, and an Entrepreneur by passion. I started my career off working in the technical aspects of sports television on large networks such as ESPN, Fox, and NBC, and shortly after, I made my way into corporate broadcasting and communications. These opportunities have given me a unique perspective on mass communication as well interpersonal communication and management.
Transitioning over to my entrepreneurial efforts, I have applied that knowledge to build McCarty.TechTV. Our core offerings provide audio/video services, ranging from live steaming to technical installations, delivering to clients of all forms and sizes. We have also built a brand ‘RDU Live’ which uses radio, podcasting, and live streaming to promote musicians and entrepreneurs in the Raleigh/Durham area. Our flagship program is the RDU Live Radio show that airs weekly on Oak 93.5 FM in Raleigh, Nc. This show and brand has grown to include multiple platforms and host that cover a wide variety of niches and genres.
The thing I am most proud of in this journey has been the genuine connections I’ve made in a relatively short amount of time. My mission is to take a genuine approach to my career and definitely into my business. Anytime I have the privilege to have a microphone in my hand or find myself in front of a camera, I have the mantra “say something that means something”. This statement has become a fundamental pillar to McCarty.TechV and the RDU Live brand. That culture permeates through our hosts and journalists, to the relationships we nurture with clients, musicians, and anyone we meet.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The main ideas that I am continuing to unlearn and reshape, are that failure is not an option and perfection is a mandatory prerequisite for success.
In high school I was in the Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program. During that time, I had a wonderful Senior Army Instructor that instilled high levels of expectation and achievement to all of her ranks, and I was able to become very disciplined and learned valuable lessons from that. I also garnered this notion that anything less than perfect was unacceptable and that failure equaled defeat, and defeat was for the weak.
As I have come into my career and into entrepreneurship, I definitely realize and acknowledge the importance of professionalism and attention to detail. However on this journey, I have learned that is more important to not let the fear of failure and obsession with perfection to impede the productivity and consistency process.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Right now our best source for new clients and engaging with existing clients is Instagram. This has come about for multiple reasons, the first being the general demographic that we can curate and reach. With our business model and branding relying on interpersonal communication and community engagement, we have been able to foster and nurture real interactions. Also from a B2B basis and audience age range, Instagram sits in the middle between TikTok and Facebook, for our targeted clientele.
Likewise, lately in our business model we have embraced the concept of doing a few things very well, and we do Instagram well. And that subtle consistency and attention to detail, and learning the system and ad functions has served us well in fostering community and reaching new clients that are ready-made for us.
