We were lucky to catch up with Cameron Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cameron, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When my wife, Sunny, had our first child – I found myself tinkering in my garage while our newborn son napped. I have enjoyed working with my hands for many years through woodworking projects but grew tired of constantly cleaning up sawdust and I was ready for a new project. I have played the game of golf as long as I can remember. My grandfather taught me the game and really stoked the flame of my passion for it. His sons: my father and uncles all play, two playing collegiately at NC State University. I also played in college at UNC-Wilmington but took a break from the game as I began my career and found other hobbies. The genesis of C3 Custom Golf was – I had an old beat-up putter and decided to try and refurbish it. I was no longer using it, so I didn’t mind if I messed it up in the process. I immediately fell in love with the process. Taking an old item that has sentimental value to the owner and making it new again was an awesome experience, very rewarding and really provided a creative outlet. Through restoring golf clubs, primarily putters, I ended up acquiring a machine that engraves on metal. With that machine I found a nice niche selling custom golf ball markers, divot repair tools and other golf accessories wholesale to golf and country clubs with their club and/or event logo. We’ve been fortunate to work with some great clubs and organizations and we really try to ensure the best possible customer experience when working with C3 Custom Golf.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in Salisbury, North Carolina. It was a great place to grow up and a tightknit small community. There were many strong junior golfers around my age. I enjoyed playing, practicing, and competing with them. Golf was all that I thought about from the time I woke up as a kid until I went to bed. I eventually played college golf at UNC-Wilmington where I received a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s degree in accountancy. After college I began my career doing consulting based around my degrees in finance and accounting. That led to eventually teaching accounting and finance and no longer working directly in the industry. I still teach at our local community college and very much enjoy it. The business began with just my desire for a creative outlet and the sheer enjoyment I get out of being around and working in the golf industry. The main goal of C3 Custom Golf is to spread enthusiasm and excitement for the game of golf. We do this through providing products and services that, hopefully, make people excited about their next round of golf – whether that is a custom ball marker or a refinished golf club.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media was something I was new to before starting my business. I did not put a lot of time or thought into it. Now with the business it is the primary way we communicate with our customers and target audience. The key is to be consistent on timing and messaging. Always be professional and timely on responding. Researching market trends and how the algorithms work, though always changing, has been helpful for me and C3 Custom Golf.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When C3 Custom Golf started – all we did and were known for was refurbishing and customizing golf clubs. However, I noticed a demand for customized golf products beyond clubs such as ball markers, divot repair tools, bag tags and others. We took a leap of faith with getting into the custom golf accessory business. We now offer many retail options from our website, C3CustomGolf.com and offer these products wholesale to golf clubs. Marketing and growing our accessory side of the business is now our primary focus and we hope that will continue.
