We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cameron Kit. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cameron below.
Cameron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
“What do you think you should do?” This was the question Lance Johnson asked me often when I asked him for help. Lance was the owner of Whiteboard Geeks, an animation studio in Richmond, Virginia. Early on in the company, he asked me to run the whole thing while he went on a mission trip. I said yes. It was hard, I cried a lot, but when Lance returned, I had a sense of ownership and the ability to figure things out on my own.
Lance will always be the Best Boss I Ever Had because he taught me I could figure things out. He rarely told me what to do, he believed in me. That is so rare in the world of business! Most importantly, he taught me that I (A SCULPTURE MAJOR!) could run a successful business. I grew the company from less than $300k in revenue to over $3 MILLION in revenue, thanks in large part to Lance getting out of the way. He taught me that finding great people and giving them the room to succeed is a recipe for a great company. I’m trying to replicate that now.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Cameron Kit! I’m a documentary and sci-fi filmmaker. I am the CEO and founder of YOYOS, You Own Your Own Stories, a documentary storytelling company that tells real people’s stories that are emotional, memorable and drive results.
I was an artist from a young age, but when I discovered filmmaking in college, that instantly became my passion. I started directing short films while running an animation company. I moved to New York in 2019 to pursue my film career and worked on Apple TV sets and bigger productions. I started YOYOS in 2023 with the goal of supporting my personal film work with a meaningful film career and work/life balance. My goal is to inspire the world with powerful stories, and empower my team to grow their own successful careers in film or their own passions.
We work on amazing stories like “Write Your Own Story”
The story of Mariah Scott, a sickle cell warrior, and her fight for motherhood. This film has won multiple awards and has 120,000 views on YouTube. But most importantly, it shares an inspiring, uplifitng story about a woman writing her own story.
This is the kind of work I love to do! And I’ve found a way to make a living doing it by working with medical device companies to pay for the work. The way YOYOS makes money is evolving all the time. We make podcasts, Life Stories, feature films and docu-series. But the essence of the business comes in connecting companies with patient or customer stories that need to be told. I’m deeply proud of our work.

What sets us apart is our human-centered approach to storytelling and our film festival strategy. We make films (often short documentaries less than 10 minutes long) that can get into film festivals, bringing massive PR and attention to the stories.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have a core drive to share positive images fo the future. I consider myself a Solarpunk, someone who can imagine a positive future where we live in community, have solved ecological problems and are free to pursue our dreams. I am a huge fan of science fiction but we don’t see much positive sci-fi. My mission in life is to support stories that paint a picture of how life could be BETTER in the future. From flying electric cars to free child-care to solar-powered cities. This is the core mission that drives my work!

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
This is the most important question to me. Reading has been the true secret to my success. I don’t have an MBA, I say reading business books was my MBA. Reading is why I have been able to start YOYOS!
I read “Ultimate Sales Machine” by Chet Holmes when I was 24 and it really transformed me. I started saying mantras, I got better at sales and I began to think about how to run a company.
Most recently I’ve been really fired up by “10x is easier than 2x” – which teaches you how to grow a thriving company and work LESS!
The same authors wrote “WHO NOT HOW” about hiring and bringing on the right talent, which changed how I think about hustling and grinding. Today I look to replace my own work with other talented people who can do it better, so I can focus on big feature projects and Netflix deals.
I have MANY. You can check out my goodreads list on business book here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/4875898?shelf=business-books
