Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cameron Keeling. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cameron, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
Cameron spent many years grinding the late-night scene in Westport. Playing for years in a weekly resident band at The Westport Saloon. In that formative time, Cameron was part of multiple groups including a band named Grassfed. They spent years honing their skills, getting the show ready for the road. After years of playing multiple times a week in Westport, along with many other venues in the Kansas City area, they did just that. Taking the show all around the United States focusing mostly on regional shows and festivals, including touring part of Europe. This experience contributes to making Cameron the veteran picker he is today, well-traveled and ready for just about any type of live performance scenario. As he prepares to begin releasing his first solo material, the work he has done over the past decade shines through, bringing a raw look inside, covering life, death, grief, and growth using a wide range of music packed with stories of from a road full of adventure!
Cameron, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Cameron Keeling is a Kansas City based song writer who has spent years travelling and sharing stories through music. while cutting his teeth on bluegrass in places like the Pecan Grove at Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield Kansas, he has found the importance of preserving a tradition of the music of those who paved the path before him. Gaining more experience and friendships on this path, he has found that he finds the most joy when collaborating with those around him. Creating a vessel for positivity and connection, He often credits the good times to those around who have helped by being involved. Sharing smiles that last for miles is a crucial goal when performing, when using music in this way, it’s almost impossible not to have fun. Making connections has been crucial to the growth of Cameron’s music career. it is fun to make music with the people you love, together we make a beautiful sound.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
If you like an artist, figure out how to support them! Go to shows, buy merch and listen to the albums. Artists spend lots of time and energy to make it to even the smallest shows. One of the most rewarding things after a long road is a warm welcome from friends. By supporting musicians on the road, you are helping them when they need it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I feel being able to put my thoughts to music has helped to promote so much happiness and healing to my life. Being able to process the good, and the bad and everything in between. Like any other art form, there is music made for performing, and also just for personal growth. I also feel that there are parts of music listening that can become very interesting from a musician standpoint.
