We were lucky to catch up with Cameron Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cameron, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client was actually someone who followed me on Twitter. We were mutual friends, but we didn’t know each other. At the time, I had just started posting my art on my social media accounts. I finally began to take my artwork seriously. It shifted from me just drawing casually to ‘hey, people actually like your art and want to purchase it’. As a result, I began posting more frequently. One day, I received a message about a painting I had done and asked for a price. My first painting was sold for $40 dollars. It wasn’t much, but it held a great deal of significance for me. It was truly a wow moment for me. The idea that I can create something from my imagination and bring it to life, and someone wants to purchase it from me. Truly humbling.
Cameron, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Cameron Jones and I am the founder of SilentGeniusCreates, a business that I am an artist and creator of. My creations include digital art, paintings, stickers, pins, clothing, and keychains that are inspired by the world around me. I find illustration, animation, and graffiti to be my favorite forms of art.
I grew up loving cartoons and animation, and the story telling behind the art. I was inspired by that. I love when I’m at a vendor event and a customer connects with a piece of art that brings back their childhood memories. Animation from the late 80s and early 90s was a source of inspiration for me. Connecting with someone who grew up watching a show or movie and feeling nostalgic when viewing my art means a lot to me. My belief is that I bring that to others through my art.
My love for drawing led me to pursue this craft. I love to create. It’s a form of escape that I would do even without compensation. Having an idea and putting it into action is something worth pursuing. I am hopeful that this will motivate someone to have faith in their idea and share it with the world.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I believe that as a business owner on social media, you’re always trying to find ways to expand your audience. For me, I think the best way is to be yourself. As an artist in the beginning, I would just post the final product. I learned that people love to observe the process. I started uploading short videos of myself drawing. I make time to go live and draw a few times a week. My goal is to establish a connection with the audience by asking questions in polls, demonstrating the art supplies I use, explaining the software I use, and offering advice. Connecting and growing an audience can be done in many different ways.
If possible, apply to vendor events and connect with the people in person. I think that’s the best way, if possible. You become a human being instead of a social media account or business. Share your story with others by talking to them.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Vendor events in my area have been a new source of clients for me. I regularly participate in vendor events in my region, and to me, they have all been successful. Even when sales are low, you can still connect with different artists and people. Passing your business card or social media accounts to them is an option. They may not buy anything, but they may follow you on social media or subscribe to your channel. Stay positive and keep in mind that clients can offer support beyond donating a dollar.
