Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cameron Graves. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Cameron thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I never really learned, I just decided one day that I was going to start painting. It kind of just happened. It’s always good to have background knowledge on what your interested in so I read a lot.
I don’t feel like there’s anything that can really speed up a learning process things take time. It’s day by day.
To me there aren’t really any essential skills it’s more about trying new things and non repetitive paintings.
I don’t feel like there are any obstacles standing in my way. More so just learning new information on what I’m doing.

Cameron , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a 23 year old artist from South Florida. I began doing photography and teaching myself graphic design about 5 years ago. For about a year now I have started to paint. I was never really interested in drawing or painting I just kind of woke up one day and decided I was going to start doing this. Photography felt dull to me and saturated with people so I wanted to start over and learn something new. On a random trip to Orlando I was lucky enough to see the featured works of Jean- Michel Basquiat at Orlando Museum of Art. When I saw the impact his paintings had on others and myself I was sold.
I would be interested in doing commission for a reasonable price. As of right now I’m just focused on creating a portfolio that I can be appreciative of and submit them to call for entry’s at art galleries.
My work is mainly abstract contemporary art.
I don’t really know if my work separates me from others, I mainly just create work for myself and what I think is nice. I’m most proud of the fact that I’m just taking a risk and starting something new and fresh for myself. What I would like potential new clients or followers to know is that I am always making new work and I feel like there is much more room to grow.
The main place readers can go to view my work or learn more is Instagram. I try to post as much as possible and I respond to everyone on there.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal or mission would be to get into an art gallery wether it’s for photography or painting. And when it comes to the actual journey itself just growing as an artist trying to create new and different paintings.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn would be trying to be a perfectionists and letting things happen. With photography you can be precise and balanced the photo can be cropped accordingly. But with painting I’d like to think that there are no boundaries or guidelines. So I struggled with being a perfectionist. Once the paint is on the canvas you can’t erase it only start over or paint over the mistake so I had to unlearn being a perfectionist and following these so called rules and guidelines for art. When it comes to painting I just try to let it flow and continue on I don’t feel like it has to look like anything special or the next best work of art. It’s the idea of understanding what not to do next time your creating something.
