We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cameron Cooper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cameron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
The Director of MODGolf (Jake Saladin) and I had an idea to partner together to bring golf simulation, instruction, and competition all to the same place at Blackhorse Golf Club in Cypress, TX. We then had to work on the setup of the simulator studio at the Teaching Center on the far side of the range. We looked at different options for bay enclosures and additional launch monitors. We decided to go with 24/7 Golf and a couple of their enclosures. We also added the Garmon R10 launch monitor for our mobile simulator setup. The GC3 and Flightscope X3 round out our launch monitor line up. Now, no matter what the weather conditions are, you can compete, play, practice, and develop your golf skills!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For me, golf has always been a passion. When I first learned about golf simulators, I was hooked! You can start playing some of the most famous courses in a matter of minutes. I feel like MODGolf sets itself apart because it merges the development of your game with golf simulation and it allows people to grow as competitive golfers too. We also have a way to bring a golf simulator directly to people’s homes, garages, and driveways. It’s truly amazing to be able to provide easier access to the game of golf!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When operating a small business, I feel like one of the toughest things to do is gain awareness from the community about what you can provide. It is a constant task to try to grow your brand and impact on the community. Continuing those efforts shows resilience in itself because it is a pretty difficult thing to do.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There has been a lot of brainstorming about different ideas, for the events in particular. Originally we were just going to have a series of tournaments. We then decided to go with two different leagues. One for 2 vs 2 team events and one for individual competition. It allows for different types of atmospheres but both should be extremely fun!
