Hi Cameron , thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I have earned a full-time living from my artwork. I moved from Akron Ohio to Los Angeles California and had difficulty getting a job, so I looked on eBay to see what people would buy. Pinup art sold well, so I gave it a try and it surprisingly took off. I wish I had tried to sell my art online sooner. The work I sold online led to other jobs in Hollywood and around the world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been drawing since I was 3 years old. I became a professional in 2009, doing projects for different businesses. I moved to L.A. in 2010 to try to work in Hollywood and managed to do work for Warner Bros, Film L.A. and many others. What set me apart from other working artists was style and a quick turnaround time. Clients would see what I did for others and knew that I could help them make their creative dreams come true. I am most proud of the places I’ve been and the people I’ve met along the way. By selling thousands of art pieces online, it gave me access to the entire world.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I moved 3,000 mile from home in OH to L.A. with only $145. I had no job, but I believed I was taking what I knew how to do to the place where it was most valuable. Hollywood was a game changer that let me know that I could compete on a large stage.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having access to the world. It would have been much harder 30 years ago to sell comics and pinup art to other countries. The internet changed all of that. Now, I have clients all over the globe.
