We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cameron Becht. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cameron below.
Cameron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
When I think back to a recent moment where kindness stood out to me, I had a friend on my birthday buy me a boom about sharks. Now if you ask anyone in my family I was obsessed with sharks as a kid. I would sit down and just list different species of sharks for hours till and I never got board of it. I think of if the reasons this gift stood out to me so much is because I don’t remember telling them I ever had an obsession with sharks but it showed they listened and I really appreciated that.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a business owner of Eclipse Lighting and Grip and Cameron Becht Films. Eclipse is a full service grip and electric house in the film industry while CBF is a production company I run! I’ve had a lot of curve balls thrown at me over the years. I started out actually working in a supplement store and my buddy bought a camera and started taking pictures. For some reason that sparked something in me to follow a similar journey. After being in photography for awhile I wanted to convey more emotion with my work and I felt like video/film was a way to do that, you are taking 24 Pictures every second anyway. My first ever film set I got on was because I met a guy at a local photo store in town (Chuck Rubins) and he said to me “Hey want to work on a film set?” I jumped at the offer and I have to say once I set foot on set I was hooked. Over the years of doing this I would say what I’m most proud of is my growth and the relationships I’ve made along the way. I will be the first to say I’m not perfect and I’ve made plenty of mistakes in the industry but reconciling those mistake with myself and others has been a journey I’ve loved. The people I have in my life now because of this industry is a blessing as well, from my amazing business partner Allen wilson to my good friend and podcast co-host Benjamin Gilmore, film has connected us all and brought us closer together.
Any advice for managing a team?
If I’ve learned anything from managing crews of all sizes from 5-30 people it’s that everyone is on the same level as you. No one you meat is worse or better then you and no matter there experiences people deserve to be heard. When managing people as well I’ve noticed performance increases whenever people feel attached to a project, like it’s their own in a way.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Absolutely, how to think like a monk by Jay shetty was an amazing book to read. Some other amazing sources of knowledge/wisdom is On Purpose Podcast, Andrew Huberman Podcast, Crushing it by Gary Vee, 12 and a Half by Gary Vee, The School of greatness, Dr. David Sinclair, Tony Robbins Life Force, and so many more.
I’ve realized life is more about the mental than anything and without a strong mind (and body) you can never truely prosper.
