Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cameron Bailey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cameron, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The first time I saw actual profit from my music was back in 2020. It was for my song, “Through It All” which is a very personal song for me. I didn’t know how the world would receive it but I was putting my heart and emotions on that track. It received around 17,000 streams which equated to $18. That sounds horrendous but for the decade plus I’ve been doing music, it was a glimmer of hope. I do not make music with money as my priority, but as a basis to tell my story to the world. If anything, it was satisfying to see that I connected with real people from around the world.
Cameron, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well let’s start with my name. My name is Cameron Bailey but my stage name is Quote. I chose that name for myself because I can pretty much recite any of my favorite songs word-for-word, but also I have hopes of one day the world will quote me word-for-word. I started with poetry at around nine or ten years old and then transitioned to rap when I was 16. My mom is my core for even creating music. She passed when I was nine years old and I made a vow to make her proud, and to always keep my head on straight. Due to this, I have been abstinence from any drugs or alcohol my entire life. I am three decades old but I do not feel anywhere near that age.
The one thing that sets me apart is my creativity. I know that sounds cliché but once you listen to my art, you will understand. I am not afraid to break the mold and be myself. Everyone sounds the same but I cannot do such things.
As far as music, my proudest moments are hearing from celebrities such as Bow Wow, King Los, DC Young Fly, etc. that I actually do have good sounding music. I mean that’s what all artists want to know like, “is my music valid?”. I feel like if a famous artist tells you that, than you are doing quite well.
In conclusion, I want my potential fans to know that I will always evolve. I love to experiment with different sounds. You don’t ever have to worry about me making the same album twice.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best way you can support an artist is by attending their shows, tours, buying merchandise. After all, this is their job and you are the customer.
Aside from that, I would say even interacting with them and telling them what could be better. I know that’s easier said than done because most famous artists don’t listen to fans input but I promise I will never be like when I reach such a level.
Why would you not listen to those that you are seeing your music to?
That doesn’t make sense to me. You should be in direct communication with your fans and receiving input from them.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Just that!
Being able to create whatever you want. It’s therapeutic in a way and expressive to lay everything that’s on your inside on the outside.
