We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cameo Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cameo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve always had a passion for writing and story telling but never really made the time to do it because I was so busy as a mother, wife, and employee. In 2020, during the pandemic I was laid off from my job, I could have been upset but honestly I looked at it as a blessing in disguised. I had more time at home with my children and could figure out what my purpose is. In August of 2020, I did a Instagram Live discussing my journey and what tools I found useful on my healing journey. I named it Pain, Power, and Purpose. The next day I went on a spiritual trip to Sedona, Arizona where I received a message to finally write my book. So instead of doing IG Lives discussing Pain Power and Purpose, I began to write about Pain Power and Purpose. My healing journey was something that needed to be shared with others. People needed something tangible that they could relate and reference to. I stepped out on faith and took the big risk of speaking my truth in my published book Pain, Power, Purpose: Release, Regain, and Reveal What is Within. Yes, there were some uncomfortable truths that was shared and yes, I lost relationships with family members, but it was all worth it because it also helped other family members begin their healing journey. It also brought me and my mother closer. While speaking my truth was an embarrassment to some, so many others nationwide have found my book helpful for them. As a life coach, I focus on working through those traumas of life and moving forward to be the best version of yourself and living out your purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Cameo Thomas, I’m from Portland, Oregon. I am a published author, life coach and owner of Lotus Coaching & Consulting. My first published book is Pain Power Purpose: Release, Regain, and Reveal What is Within which is available on my website, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon. I recently wrote and published a children’s book with my 7 year old daughter called Laiyah the Ladybug. I have always had a passion for helping others and I was always that one friend that others would come to for advice. Once the pandemic happen I had a epiphany to do more for others and become a life coach. As a life coach, I help clients that are on their spiritual healing journey move from pain to purpose. We work on moving from stagnation to taking action. I support clients with the inner healing and work that takes place. I provide them tools that they use on their life long journey of living a more purposeful life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that even those that you have supported in their career and life journey, they will not support you on yours. I love supporting others whom I have strong connections with, rather it’s at work or in my community, if I love what you are doing I am your biggest cheerleader and supporter. Unfortunately, that same support was not reciprocated when I became a life coach and published my first book. I even began to question myself and my worth. But, quickly realized that I was focusing on the lack of. What I had to unlearn was to not focus so much on those who were not supportive and truly appreciate those who are supportive. i had to go back to my belief of gratitude. I had to really be grateful for those that have truly been supportive of me. Those that were outside of my local network. If I wanted to reach more people out of my circle I had to start thinking globally instead of locally. This has been a game changer and I now focus more on expanding my network globally.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
To be successful in any field you must have a passion for it and it’s very helpful to have a mentor. A mentor or life coach especially in your field. I can remember at the beginning stages of my life coaching career my mentor challenging me and asking questions that pushed me to be who I am today. The one question that has stuck with me was “what’s your strategy?” . Having a mentor will help you with strategies for your business, encourage and empower personal goals, increase your confidence, become a leader, provide useful feedback, and build a professional network. A mentor will hold you accountable for any stagnation and will also celebrate the achievements. I highly encourage people to have a mentor or life coach to get the most success out of their career field.
