We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cameisha Brewer Dickerson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cameisha below.
Cameisha, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
When I first started my private practice journey, it quickly became obvious that I was not prepared for the business side of a mental health private practice. I spent my first few years doing a ton of trial and error. It took me years to feel confident in my ability to be a business owner in the mental health industry. The main steps I had to take were finding a business coach/mentor outside of my industry to teach me the mindset, skills, and strategy to implement. Some of the key challenges were that business coaching and quality online courses were not cheap. At the time, I had a very limited budget. An additional challenge was that business coaches and online course creators did not understand the legal and ethical guidelines for my field. So some of the marketing tips could not be done due to client confidentiality. The one thing I wish I would have done differently was developed a niche much sooner and been more patient with myself during the journey. Any young professional who is just starting out, I highly recommend investing in a qualified business coach in the mental health industry. It will save you so much time, money, and spare you from the headache.
Cameisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I love helping people transform their lives! I get really excited about seeing my therapy clients and my business coaching clients step into the lifestyle they want to create. I first got started working on my business by doing closet makeovers for clients for extra money. I wanted to help people organize their lives and declutter. One day after a powerful closet makeover, my client started sobbing hysterically because of all of the baggage I helped her remove. I knew then that I needed to complete my journey of becoming a licensed professional counselor. So I took the leap, and I launched my private practice. What motivates me every day is just knowing that I am building a legacy for my children, and I get to do it by helping people shift their thoughts into alignment with their goals.
The services I provide are business coaching and online courses for new therapists. I also provide speaking and consulting services for businesses, colleges, and non profit organizations. The problem I solve for new therapists is teaching them the business side of building a private practice so they can stop stressing about how they will be able to provide for their families and start doing meaningful clinical work.
What sets me apart from others is that I genuinely want to help people. I value developing deep relationships with the people I serve. The people in my coaching programs and courses are not just numbers to me. They are people who are destined to make an impact in the world.
I am most proud of the fact that I have a career that I love. I get to provide mental health treatment in a way that aligns with my core values and my faith. I want people to know that with God all things are possible. I want people to know that you can create life changing transformation if you are willing to do the work, and commit to your decision.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been developing quality relationships. A large part of my marketing comes from referrals and testimonials. My clients refer other people to me all of the time. It really helps take the pressure off of my marketing team. We value making sure each and every person who works with us feels valued, appreciated, and well served. I spend a lot of time creating a high touch point customer service experience. We want our clients and customers to enjoy their time working with us and get results. We treat people well. We care about how they feel. We check in with them through each phase to make sure we are providing them with excellent service because it matters. Our future clients and business opportunities literally depend on how we handle our current clients. So we serve them well every day.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
One of the things that helped me build my reputation within the market is consistent visibility. As a part of my framework I teach new therapists how to create an online and offline presence. So I practice what I preach. I am visible on multiple social media platforms. I do a lot of speaking engagements. I’m active in the community. I’m also an author so sometimes I’m a vendor at events where my ideal clients will also be attending. Recently I launched The CEO Clinician Podcast which is available on several platforms and my website. Visibility is integral in the overall success of my marketing plan. I have to be in several places because I don’t know where someone will find me. It is my responsibility to make sure I am strategically positioned to be found by the people who are looking for me. Another part of my reputation is that I show up in a way that is in alignment with my highest self. I’m known for being warm, charismatic, funny, compassionate, and very direct. I provide a high quality professional experience when people work with me, and they know what to expect because I’m consistent in how I serve.
