We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cam Simone . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cam below.
Cam, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up my first concert was the Janet Jackson rhythm nation tour when I was 5 years old. Since I was little I idolized Janet Jacksons’ ability to move a crowd while still putting on an amazing show, from then I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do. I became a professional dancer from the age of 5-18 in all styles of dance and was in honors choir all through out grade school. It wasn’t until I injured myself dancing in 2014 that I started pursuing music full time, and that was when I knew I had found my passion. Being able to channel my emotions into music and making songs that people could relate to is all I wanted to do. I aspire for my music to move people like the great legend herself, music is my therapy and I want it to make others feel as good as I do when I’m creating it.
Cam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Cam simone. I am a singer song writer born in Detroit and raised in Chicago. I relocated to Georgia in 2012 where I then began to pursue my music career. As a Midwest native my music varies from house music and r&b to pop and even some EDM. During the pandemic of 2020 I took a risk and flew to New York for 24 hours to shoot my matrix inspired hit single “know her” which is now known internationally and has over 150k views on YouTube. Since then I have written and recorded songs for the BET Tyler Perry series “All the Queens Men” and many other projects to come. Pursing my music career in Atlanta has honestly changed my life. After graduating from Georgia state with my psychology degree, I thought I would lead a regular life as a child therapist, but I’m thankful to have had so many musical opportunities that pushed me to pursue my dreams instead.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think it’s support important for artist to support other artist/ creatives. In a competitive industry such as the music industry it’s easy to get sucked into thinking you have to bash others in order to come up, but in reality helping one another by simply sharing a post or downloading a song could help us all win. There are so many unknown artist that have SO much raw talent but it gets overlooked because they don’t have a ton of followers or a blue check. I believe in supporting all music that I think is great, whether I know the artist or not.. even if they have 5 followers. Just like we share celebrities songs and pictures we should do the same for new artist trying to make it too.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Having a mentor in any field that you’re pursuing is the one of the best decisions you can make. I started off in my music career with just myself and my older brother who also is a singer/ song writer who would help me out along the way. After a couple years of trying to figure things out on my own I found my mentor who not only expanded my mindset as far as being more than just an artist, but he taught me so many more things and introduced me to more people that could help me get to where I wanted to me. In all it’s okay to not know what you’re doing, ask questions! Find someone who does know what they’re doing and learn from them. Knowledge in this industry is power.
