We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cam Allen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cam, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
At about seven months into doing our podcast, Apple Juice For 2, we had interviewed only a couple of musicians briefly. None were really from our local scene here in Charleston Sc. But that changed when we moved our podcast “studio” out of my parents house, where it had been started, and into our own apartment. With our set having a new and refreshed look and us feeling afforded a new level of creative freedom, we began to truly grow into our own. Shortly after that transition we connected with local musicians Jailan Williams and Marco Incampo of the JusMusic podcast and did an interview for each other’s show to cross promote. Through them we met a few other local musicians and had them on for an interview about their journey as artists and their current projects. Any artist’s story includes a network of other talented people. We identified those people in the stories that artists were telling for our interviews, and reached out to invite them on our show to share their journey. Before we knew it a musician would lead us to a local comedian for an interview, who would lead us to a DJ, who would lead us to local clothing designers, who lead us to local entrepreneurs, and so on and so on. These interviews have been our most meaningful projects because ever since then the local artists and entrepreneurs of Charleston have become an integral part of our show and brand.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Apple Juice For 2 is a commentary & interview talk show podcast from Charleston South Carolina. I produce it and co-host it along side Isaiah Allen & Brevin Stallings. We offer local artists & businesses the opportunity to create compelling promotional campaigns through the individualized production of content about them and their story. Our promotional campaign package includes vertical 4k video clips of an interview with you on our show, along with the full 30 minute interview, so you can spread and generate excitement for your message by sharing your story. Any artist or entrepreneur knows these days that in order to connect with their audience or market, they have to capture their hearts and minds with a story. Not everyone has the ability to afford everything needed to get stunning video that will cut through the noise of our social media landscape, let alone amass the knowledge and skill needed to do that. That is why we make our knowledge and skill affordable and accessible to everyone. Empowering artists & entrepreneurs with the perfect presentation for their message or campaign is our passion.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In David Byrnes book “How Music Works” he has a chapter on this in which he says, “People and neighborhoods that were never suspected of being huge creative hubs – Detroit, Manchester, Sheffield, Seattle – exploded when folks who didn’t even know they had it in them suddenly blossomed and inspired everyone around them.” Even though artists in a certain community vary in style, medium, beliefs and so on, they all influence each other which ultimately drives the evolution of our culture. Society needs to make it possible and easy for artists to gather in a space for shows and events, society needs to foster the local businesses and bars that artists meet and perform, and local venues need to give up and coming artists a chance. If every artist can pursue their full potential, they’ll be elevated by each others output.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience has been key in our journey of doing our podcast. It can be incredibly frustrating when the thing that you put so much hard work and sacrifice into doesn’t seem to be resonating with a larger audience, or when the ideas and thoughts you put out aren’t received kindly, or when balancing the show and our lives among many other things. The fact of the matter is that anyone who starts from zero and goes on a journey of building something from scratch will be hit with setbacks, criticism, and disappointment. Resilience is the only way you can break through to the other side where you see the fruits of your labor materialize the dream you have had in mind. Resilience is as important to a guitar player as knowing different chords.
