We recently connected with Calvin Yearworth and have shared our conversation below.
Calvin, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
As cheesy as it sounds I just want to be remembered as a good person. Ya, it would be fantastic to be remembered as an incredibly important person in my career field but realistically that’s something that’s out of my control (call it fate, opportunity, whatever) so I feel that all I can control is how I move through life and how I impact those around me. In terms of legacy, I just want to be able to look back and know that I kept my moral compass and that I was able to have a positive impact. on peoples lives

Calvin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Calvin Yearworth, I am a 29 years old, Latino, and I am a film student at the University of Winnipeg in his second-last year. I chose Film as a career choice because I have always been passionate about that medium since I was a kid. Also, my mum has had a big influence in pointing me towards all the artistic mediums, since, as an Artist, she was well versed in things such as painting, drawing, poetry, philosophy etc. This background was able to give me, as a young person, a wide platform to explore and experiment, but also (most importantly) I had another artist to learn from. With this background in mind, I found a medium that speaks to me and that has become integral to my journey as a filmmaker. Photography.
Through my love of photography, I was able to learn important details that are prevalent within film, such as framing and lighting and the intricacies of how cameras operate. In photography , as in film, the subject is viewed by the person (or camera) observing them and they become a world unto themselves. The way that life and peoples lives were reflected through film and photography is what I have always been interested in. I want to tell stories. Stories about people we know too well and people who we have no idea about. Stories about people from the past and from the future. Stories that reflect life and history as I see it. The films I want to make are ones that have you thinking as soon as you walk out the theatre and on the drive home and later even. In terms of film experience, I’ve worked doing lighting, sound recording, assistant directing, script supervising, cinematography and directing. Though I feel most comfortable directing or being the cinematographer because in my opinion, they have the most possibilities creatively. I think that I am most proud of making the choice to attempt to live as a creative, while I am also thankful for being able to continue on this artistic journey.
The main thing id want people to know about me is that I’m human too, I’m capable of creation and beauty but I am also capable of destruction and anger. And I believe that my work reflects that.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Creativity takes time. Throughout my life, I have seen that there is a pervasive type of thought when it comes to non-creatives, that creating something should be done within a matter of days, hours even. Being creative is not viewed as something that can attract monetary gain or that should be given a large amount of funding. Non-creatives put a price on art and creativity only when it suits them and their needs.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The aspect of creation itself. I have a myriad of ideas and thoughts swirling in my head always (as I’m sure, most of us do). the outlet of being an artist/creative is that I am able to actualize these thoughts and ideas through whatever medium I choose. I guess another rewarding aspect would be that, throughout the years, I’ve learned how to use other mediums to express myself. whether it be through writing poetry or going out to take pictures.
