Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Calvin Bauer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Calvin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As far as being an instrumentalist, my mom signed me up for classical piano lessons as a young kid. That really translated to every other instrument I learned. I decided to pick up guitar when I realized it sucks trying to cover hardcore punk songs on piano haha.
I do wish I had taken lessons for guitar and vocals much earlier on. I played guitar for over 10 years before my first guitar lesson.
On the side of being a songwriter though, I’m not sure how I learned it. My earliest memory with it is being an 8 year old and trying to convince my older brother that I wrote Walkin on the Sun by Smash Mouth haha. When he rightfully called me out, I decided then that I would write my own songs, and so I started right then!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Mainly what I do is write music and play in bands. My main groups are Skull Servant, Level the Compound, and Lighterless.
Beyond that though I help other artists write songs and I also have a studio for recording music for other groups.
I also do some music lessons, for guitar, and piano.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m terrible with social media, but luckily, my roommate and fellow Skull Servant member Noah Terrell is an absolute wizard with it. He built up the social media followings of every single account we have entirely from scratch. So my advice is if you’re focused on creative prospects and struggle with marketing and social media, hire somebody! It’s totally worth it!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of, for example, making music, is being able to listen to it when it releases! Don’t get me wrong, the writing and recording process is fun, but having a finished product you put so much labor into is incredibly rewarding.
